From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up–This book picks up where Hearts at Stake (Walker, 2010) ended. As the various clans convene for the coronation of Helena Drake, the new vampire queen, her family is frantically negotiating to create alliances and bring peace to the vampire world. Isabeau St. Croix has been sent as a delegate from the Hounds, a misunderstood clan that practices magic and has strong connections to animals. When Leander Montmartre, a legendary evil vampire, threatens the royal family with his desire for the throne, Isabeau and Logan Drake work together to protect their loved ones. Their relationship becomes intense as they uncover a sinister plot that could destroy all of vampirekind. Harvey continues to weave an action-packed story full of intrigue, suspense, and romance with a great cast of characters. The historical flashbacks into Isabeau's life and the unique vampire lore of the Hounds add a new twist to the genre. A satisfying read in a series that is sure to have a strong following.Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY

I thought this...

It was clearly wonderful.
It contained a haunting exciting storyline. Flashbacks to the time of Marie Antoinette were arresting.
Logan Drake...vampire royalty and Isabeau...200 year old sort of special ops vampire were the essential characters.
It was truly their story and it was lovely and feisty and sexy and fun. Heck...I love Logan Drake. As a matter of fact...I could love any of the Drake brothers including their father.
The villains were villainous and hateful...The dogs..valiant and loyal and an incredible addition to this story.
One thing...I urge you to read these in order to get the full charming effect of this series...
It is amazing!!!
It cries out to be a movie or at list a miniseries...

I read the first book in the Drake Chronicles and loved it. I'm always afraid that the second book in a series won't live up to my expectations, but this one far exceeded them. I loved the characters in the first book, and felt just as strongly connected to new characters in the second book. It is a great read, very well written, and highly enjoyable.

I did not like this second book. I thought it was going to be funny as the first one. No having Lucy and Nicholas in the book made a HUGE difference! Logan in the first book was a funny boy. But In this book was nothing like he was in Hearts at Stake.Isabeau was boring. Her POV was so boring. And the few times that Lucy was in the book was excellent. Because this book was long and boring and nothing like book 1 I gave it 2 stars. Now I can't wait to start book#3, I was told it is much better than this book.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Hearts at Stake, and I was looking forward to the sequel. I was a little disappointed when I realized that it's not really about Solange and Lucy, the main characters of the last book. They both make appearances, as do the vampire hunter Keiran, Solange's brother Nicholas, and the rest of the Drake clan, but this time the focus is on Logan, the second youngest Drake brother, and Isabeau, a member of the Hound vampire tribe.

Logan's mother Helena is the new vampire queen, and creepy Montmartre still wants to marry his sister Solange, the vampire princess. The Drakes are trying to make an alliance with the Hound tribe, and Isabeau is representing the Hounds at Helena's coronation. Isabeau wants to kill Greyhaven, the vampire who turned her and is one of Montmartre's followers.

The action is fast and furious, and Logan and Isabeau are soon caught up in various vampire machinations. Logan is astounded by Isabeau and feels very protective of her. Isabeau is a bad-ass who's not used to needing protection, but she still finds herself drawn to Logan.

This book is an entertaining, quick read. My only real complaint is that since it's such a quick read, the romance feels a bit rushed. Despite this, I enjoyed the book, perhaps not quite as much as I enjoyed the first one, but certainly enough to keep reading the series.

Source: I own a copy of this book.

Note: These are my personal opinions. I received no outside person comments or opinions.

Much like the first book, I really loved all the action and suspense in every chapter. It kept me on edge and engaged in the book. I just know by after reading the second book its going to be a great series. Its just too bad this series isn't more popular.

The first book was written in two POVs and like that book this one is too. Although, this book is told from the POVs of two totally different characters. I feel like Harvey did a great job with the narration of the new characters but I still wondered what was going on with the old ones that were narrated in the first book.

I loved how we got a better look into the different breeds of the vampires. It really clarified just who and what they are. I got a better grasp and understanding of who the bad guys are and what is really the plot of the series so far.

Harvey also added something totally original and new--vampires wielding magic. Witches are also a key component in this book. It was fresh and I look forward to reading more on this topic and learning more.

I know the next book in the series is told from new characters POVs and we get a look into their lives. I love how Harvey writes and has developed her series. Its great and fun but also frustrating at the same time because just when you learn so much about two characters Harvey flips the switch and brings new characters in and you learn more exciting things about these totally different characters.

Harvey is an amazingly talented author and I loved these last two books. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

Overall, a great read; a great book.

Isabeau and Logan are just great. I really liked how they clicked and the chemistry between them. She's fearless, yet I loved the vulnerability of her past and how she's grown stronger. I loved how she was developed and he's just... so in love with her it's heartwarming.
The overall plot with the Drakes runs smoothly as the story keeps progressing in a natural way.
If you liked book one, even if Lucy, Sol, Kieran and Nick aren't the main characters, you'll enjoy getting to know more about the brothers and of the story.
