I ran across Richan by chance with a free book from the River series; I was hooked. It was the 2nd book, yet it stood alone so easily. I find every book he writes to be that way.
The Blood Gardener is tying major parts of all 3 series together; however, I want to emphasize how the book DOES stand on it's own. You can enjoy it without reading any other book in any of the series. The Dark River is evolving; more layers are exposed. It's a very good book. I'm so anxious to read the next one! This book earns it's 5 stars effortlessly. Bravo, Richards!
Derick continues his visits from the real world to the Dark River in order to spend time with Anna's monochild, A. As time goes on, it becomes apparent that A is far more than a typical monochild . . . Besides the constant dangers he faces on the journeys to the dark side, Derick also has the pressures of the real world to contend with.
In this second book, Derick, Monkey, and A have become the "main" characters, and their stories now remind me much more of the Downwinders and original River series. While each book focuses on a specific issue or problem, the scene is slowly but unquestionably being set for a much larger issue to come--one that will inevitably tie all three branches in the River Universe together. Fans of both other series will be pleased to note some familiar faces from each manifest for brief periods in THE BLOOD GARDENER.
Overall, I felt that Richan did a fantastic job of increasing our familiarity with Derick and A, giving us additional information on their talents, personalities, and emotions. As this ties into the other branches, at least basic knowledge of the "gifteds" is necessary to get the full enjoyment of this book. Also, I'd recommend reading THE DARK RIVER: A, as it explains so much about how A came to be, and Derick's attachment to him.
A deadly new voyage filled with new monsters, creatures, and unfortunate things that can happen to those inside the Dark River. A fantastic, rapidly increasing series that I have followed through the very beginning. This particular book really puts The Dark River branch right up there alongside the other two.
Highly recommended to fans of the River Series and those that love paranormal stories/series!
