The 12th SS Panzer Division Hitler Youth was formed in early 1943 following the German disaster at Stalingrad in Russia, and was trumpeted by German propaganda as a symbol of the willingness of German youth to make the ultimate sacrifice for Fuhrer und Vaterland. Most of the division s soldiers were born in 1926, and averaged barely eighteen years of age when they underwent their baptism of fire among the verdant fields and hedgerows of Normandy on 7 June 1944. Anchoring the eastern flank of the Normandy front, these young SS soldiers successfully defended the strategically vital town of Caen against British and Canadian forces until finally overwhelmed a month later by the Allies enormous superiority in men and materiel. Although the Hitler Youth Division was largely annihilated in the process, it won the grudging respect of Allied forces as the finest German division faced in Normandy. The author s account of its history is based largely on primary source materials, including extensive archival holdings, published memoirs, official histories, and numerous interviews with former division members.

Great book for a great story !

Established after the defeat at Stalingrad the division was a product of Germany`s
transition to a total war effort, which sought to harness all human and material resources for the
Reich's struggle for existence. This books tells us about the origins, recruitment
and training of the 12 th SS Panzer Division "Hitler Youth". They faced the invasion
on D-Day, June 6 th, 1944 and the following days.
Their assigment was:"to throw the enemy into the sea and destroy him".
The Hitler Youth fought against vast superior forces in men and material.
Nevertheless, they stopped the Anglo- americans at the town of Caen and its surroundings
for more than a month. This is the history of their fight to the last bullet,
the story of their ultimate sacrifice in Caen.
I enjoyed very much the training part as the book describes their physical training,
their education on tactics and skills, everything they needed to survive in combat.
Also, here we learned about their ideals and motivation to join the Hitler Youth and fight
for Germany. Their motivation and discipline was exemplary:
"Thousands of aircraft, rolling barrages of the batteries, massed tank attacks
hammered them with bombs and shells. The earth heaved thunderously. An inferno
was unleashed. But faith was the strongest support of courage.
Smeared with blood, covered with dust, gasping and fighting, doggedly dug into
the earth, these youths brought the Anglo-Americans to a halt".
As for their determination and ideals, I think it is easy to judge them
now by the parameters and accepted views of our curent society. But it is a very
different thing to be in their shoes, live in a very different world
from that of today and think back then about their families, friends,
society, country, values and ask what do they expect from them, and
most important, being there and ask what do they expect from themselves in that situation.
The book that not says very much about their last battles after Caen and that
is missing in this book. I also find some prejudices and bias in the
last conclusion paragraphs but I think the author wrote that so he would
not be seen as a nazi. I would have rated this book 4 stars but I
put five stars because it is a great story that makes you feel those
days, back then, when they had to fight for their world.
It has very good pictures too and I am sure anyone who read this
book will enjoy doing so.
