Remove the phrase, "sophomore slump," from your lexicon right now, because in Phoebe Pope's world, it does not exist. Ms. Jade has written a tour-de-force novel . . . one that towers above its contemporaries. She advanced both the plotlines and the characters with an expertise and polish not found often in newly published writers. I wanted more and more and more and more . . . and with each page, I got it. This book solidifies Nya Jade's place in the YA universe. I wish I could give it 10 stars.
Phoebe is under tight watch with the three other half-shifters, Hyphas, thanks to the prophecy which claims that one of them will wield the power to change the war. The upcoming meeting with the Royal Crown, the leaders of the Shifters, isn't helping to calm her nerves. Throw in strange dreams and more layers of intrigue, and Phoebe is off in another action packed adventure.
Phoebe still isn't sure how she fits in but thanks to her friends and a good head on her shoulders is managing. Just as she's learning more about her emotional power, a new one is settling in. This constant learning about herself and the world around her, make her easy to sympathize with. She has special powers but isn't sure how to file them in her life, and is always dealing with more on top of it. In other words, she's not perfect and has to handle what's thrown at her. But she's fairly level headed, suspicious enough not to be naive and ready to do what she has to when the situation demands.
There were so many new twists and turns in this book that it felt just as refreshing and exciting as the first. While some of the side characters offer clear and needed support, others have shadows which make it difficult to know what side they're on or what their true intentions are. The layers keep the plot interesting the whole way through.
There's never a boring moment, but Phoebe runs from one situation into the next, taking on whatever gets in her way. Even the romance stays on its toes. . .although this hero is one to definitely stick with and root for. The two make a wonderful team but don't over shadow the value of Phoebe's other friends. And Phoebe needs the help because despite all of her bravery and strengths, there's a lot for her to face. In other words, this read grabbed me on the first page and held me until the very end.
I received a complimentary copy and wanted to leave my honest thoughts and opinions.
Trying to keep their relationship out of the press so no outside drama can interfere, Colten and Phoebe, have "broken up" amicable of course. So when Phoebe finds herself dreaming of Colten and others she loves, she begins to worry that a new power may be manifesting as her conversion draws near. For Phoebe and her fellow Hyphas, their conversion has sparked a special occasion as it is tied to a special prophecy. The Royal Shapers have summoned them to court, where instead of support the Four find lies, whispers, and a secret. To survive Phoebe must once again discover who her true allies are and which are the enemies.
Overall, great sequel that makes me want more! I'm definitely hooked on this series, because I just like Phoebe. She loves to be simple, but lives in a totally complicated world. I am super pissed at the death in this novel that got me crying, so I'm hoping that person perhaps didn't really get killed by the evil Immortal One. But anyways, I'm glad this book offered more of the Four because they need to start working together with they crazy cool powers, and not sure how they'll reunite but when they do it'll great. Also still not a huge fan of Colten but at least he's trying to be more helpful this time around, though not sure how as you'll see where they all end up. Seriously need to know the next part of the now.
