I gave this book 3 stars because it felt scattered to me. The story unfolds through a least four different viewpoints and two distinct time periods. Sometimes the shift takes place after a few paragraphs, not allowing the reader time to invest in the action sequences. Since the author appears to be heading toward the end of this particular storyline within her universe (book 5, Blood Finale is due in December), all four protagonists from the four series are in play and since the women have a least ten husbands/lovers each, that's a lot of characters to track. People pop in from earlier series and they pull you away from the flow as you try to remember all of their connections and just how they fit into the plot. I would have enjoyed this book more had the focus been on Breanne and her many (did I say many?) men. I do think that in order to cover the areas brought up in this book, the novel would have been at least twice as long.
This is definitely part of a series and should not be read alone. If you have the time, reread the other three books first and refresh your memory on who are all the men in Breanne's life (and Lissa's) and how the relationships evolved.
Overall, it did keep my interest enough that I will read the next book.
I've read all Blood Destiny,Ir'indicti and High Demon book. The author is prolific and although she is starting to creep her prices upward, still reasonably priced. The books are generally fast, fun, very mindless reads.
But this series (God Wars) is by far her worst to date. She tries a new writing technique switching viewpoints between multiple characters every few paragraphs or pages. This just plain sucks. If she went a significant length (20 or more pages) between characters and limited it to a few key characters it might be bearable. To further complicate her story line she switches between two different time periods and allows multiple characters to time travel. This time travel also allows them to change the past; thus changing the "present".
This book could be viewed as a juvenile teen fantasy, but sex makes it very much age inappropriate. Her love scenes drift into even more esoteric kinky sex practices and her female heroines continue to collect lovers like charms on a bracelet. The series writing tends to be repetitive. Lonely woman feeling sorry for herself. But she is somehow irresistible to males, and marries multiple hunks. The "hunks" act very immaturely (which is kind of hard to believe for mates often supposedly thousands of years old) treating her badly (does the author have a history we should know about?). Only the heroine can defeat the evil that threatens. The heroine discovers even more powers, finds a few more mates to jump into bed with, and saves the world. Her mates then rediscover how wonderful she is and crawl back begging her forgiveness. Occasionally a god intervenes if things get too tangled up and author can't otherwise straighten out the mess she has created. The Ir'indicti series differs because of a male hero, who essentially gets no mates and seems to be ultimately rejected by those mates he desires. Doesn't seem fair for the males, but author is female.
The story is predictable. The female heroines are terrible role models for young teens because of their blatant jumping into multiple beds, their casual killing of bystanders and villeins without trials, their roles as victims, and their stereotype of a woman's worth being defined as a sexual partner. At least in the God Wars the heroines value isn't defined partly by her ability to cook.
The series would also benefit by a chart showing the levels of the gods involved as to who outranks/outpowers whom. What does it take to be listed as a god. At one point she kills off a half million gods. At what point does the term god become useless and a better label would be high powered alien. And frankly after a while who cares?
The redeeming points are:
The book is inexpensive
The book is very fast read
Only if you have read everything else by the author should you even consider reading this series. This series continues with some of the characters you should be familiar with. I continue to read the series as fun escapism and because I already have so much time invested I might as well ride it to the end. If you want to kill a few hours, go for it. But be prepared to occasionally be frustrated with idiotic characters, confusing plots, and difficult to follow twists.
I cannot endorse this book as intellectual, deep or redeeming role models. But is a very quick fast paced read and still relatively inexpensive. I have since read the last book in series and can only say it gets much worse.
I am so hooked on her books that I can't put it down.
Reading her wonderful world of magic, Gods, Vamps, Wolves, etc
& mayhem rocks me to my core!
I read all the Series more times than I can count
I just can't put it down. I even have the audio version of
the first 3 Blood Destiny
(Suttle) books. I hope they put all 25 books 26 when First
Ordinance Book 3 comes out.
The connections in all Series read in the following order
really answers a lot of questions:
1. Saa Thalarr
2. Blood Destiny (Suttle)
3. High Demon
4. God Wars
5. First Ordinance
I don't want to spoil the excitement by blurting out
secrets; others have already done that.
I hope you buy these amazing books.
I can absolutely guarantee that you will read them more
than 5 times each! I have already forgotten how many
times I've read each one & I'm not exaggerating !!!!!!!!
That's nothing compared to how many times Ive listened
to Blood Destiny 1-3 in Audible.
PLEASE Connie, MAKE SURE THE DO ALL YOUR BOOKS. I
WILL CERTAINLY BUY THEM :)
After you get these check out her R-D Series - Cloud Dust
& Cloud Invasion. They are AWESOME !!!!!!!!
