Blood Profit$ is a David and Goliath story fought in the streets and alleys of Asia, America and in the halls of the US Capitol Building.
Sep 16, 2013: Randall Larsen, author Our Own Worst Enemy
Blood Profits is a fast-paced page-turner from beginning to end. and an all-to-believable tale of corruption at the highest levels of government. Blood Profits would make a great story for a TV mini-series.
Stephen Hull, MS, PhD
A superb "page turner". Grips you from page one and does not let go. Plenty of plot twists, but not convoluted. A MUST read!!

I have long admired author Jim Patrick's imagination, knowledge of politics, and grasp of global affairs, a background that gives depth and breadth to his complex, wide-ranging plot. I am already looking forward to the next volume in the new series!
|Finally a true-to-life yet fictional account of the immense corruption at the highest levels of our government, political systems and business community. America is being sold to the highest bidder and Blood Profit$ is the first novel I’ve read that gets it right. A great read. I felt I almost knew some of these characters. A call to arms for every American who is tired of those who disparage the US Constitution and the American way of life for their own profiteering!|
From the Author
Julia Abbott, a former US Army Captain serving in Iraq and protégé of a powerful US senator, is at first naïve and is used as a lobbyist to garner votes and contributions for the corrupt SMS, a Halliburton-like corporation. Charles Prendergast 2nd, football hero and son of Admiral Prendergast, the Head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, on completing his Harvard MBA is made a senior executive of SMS. He has been bred by powerful Texas political blue bloods to assume power. Alejandro 'AJ' Morales is a Mexican-American war hero of the war in Afghanistan and son of a former Montana governor who ran for senator of his state and was slandered by the corrupt power mongers. AJ wants justice for his father and wins a seat in the US House of Representatives for the Austin, Texas district. Allegra Scozzari, an out of control former Miss Texas. Her father, Nicola, is part of the Boston Mafia. Her mother, Speranza, is a daughter of the head of one of the Five Families in the New York Mob. Allegra is engaged to AJ Morales until he walks in on her cheating with Charles. In Afghanistan, AJ is captured, but his life is spared, and is shown how SMS, while involved in building roads, schools, hospitals and infrastructure in Afghanistan, while receiving huge sums of government fund for its legitimate operations, really is there to plunder the natural resources of Afghanistan. Protected by the US military and its own hired mercenaries, SMS cuts corners, over runs budgets and generally scams the US government under the protection of Congressional committees and tough Senate leaders who are in on the 'take'. AJ is shown proof that SMS sponsors and funds mercenaries to protect their mining of lithium - the key component in the production of long lasting batteries, particularly used to power electric automobiles, sophisticate electronics and military ordinance (laser, drone, communications equipment and tracking device.) Fueled by self-interest and highly manipulative bribes and political pressure, AJ eventually finds out that SMS is financed by the Mafia to launder dirty money. AJ, Charlie, Julia and Allegra are pulled together to unravel the corruption with the help of the CIA, FBI, US State and Justice departments. The Lithium will uncover the real reason the US has fought its longest war in its history, will reveal the extent of political corruption in the highest public offices in the land and will offer proof of collusion between Washington and the Mafia, something that has only been whispered about until now. The Lithium Conspiracy will take the reader from the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, to power broker meeting on yacht's in the Gulf of Mexico; from how politicians use the modern media to further their own ends to assassination attempts through Mafia hits and the lives of mercenary soldiers, all told through the eye of four people involved in both seduction and romance.

In my opinion the premise of this book could really be happening under our noses. The book paints a picture of plausible events that may actually have or are happening behind the scenes of the U.S. government.
I highly recommend this book especially to those who have ever wondered if Big Business and the "Family" have an influence on how our government is run.
Disclosure: I obtained this book during Writers Roundup 2014 in Gainesville, TX where I met Mr. Patrick in person. I thought that this book would fit with my reading tastes. He was kind enough to autograph it for me and I will cherish it.
Although fiction, the most salient feature of the book is actually its realism. The book gives a glimpse into what is arguably a sort of business-as-usual, behind-the-scenes look at the shadowy and sinister workings of conspiratorial business networks using government cover to profit off wars and the blood of others. The cornering of a scarce resource or market is usually the modus operant, reminding me of what I uncovered doing research on international heroin trafficking as a graduate student during the close of the Vietnam era. What I uncovered largely by perusing through government documents was a loose government-business-criminal cartel linking the opium fields in the Golden Triangle of Burma, Laos, and Vietnam to the morphine labs in Marseilles, France, and ultimately to the heroin distribution chains on American street corners controlled by the Mafia. Rogue military elements, including CIA and Air America, were involved in the security and transport of the opium crops from field to lab. Undoubtedly, those at the top of this secretive criminal enterprise - probably high-level politicians and businessmen, including Mafioso - were making a lot of money.
James Patrick, a political scientist and long-time Republican operative, has both the knowledge and background to understand and portray the workings of such a backwater, clandestine operation. To his credit, he succeeds in this endeavor - painting the real picture of war as more about profits, while modeling a glimmer of the machinations of profiteering military contractors like Halliburton and Blackwater who made billions in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is the perennial merging of the corporation with the national security state where profits trump both security and morality, while the Constitution is trashed. What Patrick describes in his book could easily be modeled on real-life human characters, places, events, and business entities. The unfolding plot implicates corrupted high-level government officials, Ivy League elitists, big media, special interest-driven think tanks, Mafia dons, military contractors ripping off taxpayers via monumental proportions - generally a scenario where top echelon government and corporate leaders enrich themselves while manipulating and impoverishing the gullible and pathetic voters. In Patrick's novel, one gets a sense of the massive involvement of for-profit corporations in the war zone performing duties and operations once performed by the U.S. military itself - hence the U.S. military being privatized, war motivated by making money..
Here are a few lines of dialogue between characters in the book: "These highly-placed dogs are slowly destroying what's best about our country so they can benefit financially while controlling a dumbed-down and rootless people. Powerful and high-level men and women are making a mockery of the U.S. Constitution and orchestrating foreign wars to turn a buck." To the perceptive reader, this book draws lessons and parallels concerning the U.S. rush to invade Iraq, which was premised on lies, distortions, propaganda, and media hype; the real motive was profits. Invade and destroy the Iraqi infrastructure and society. Then pay corporations with U.S. taxpayer money to rebuild and secure a war torn country.
Patrick's book Blood Profits is both entertaining and informative - exposing a realistic model for a cloaked and sinister high-level government-business centered profit machine. The climax is quite thrilling and revealing. The story ends on a positive note - providing hope that all is not lost and evidence that there are still people within government who are moral and patriotic - showing more allegiance to the Constitution than profits.
Each of the young people involved, AJ Morales, a newly elected U.S. Congressman, Charles Prendergast, a young up and coming businessman in a suspect organization and Julia Abbott, a hand-picked lobbyist for that same organization have their own reasons for foiling the conspiracy.
This fast paced, enthralling novel will hold your attention throughout. It is reminiscent of the books of authors such as James Brown and James Rollins. I am looking forward to more of the works of these two fine authors. Be sure to put Blood Profit$ at the top of your “to read” list.
