The Connection Investigation Agency has seen big changes. New partners, Tessa, Luke, and Beth, have taken over and members of the old team have moved on to pastures new.
On the first day of reopening, a body is discovered in the outhouse at the back of the office and their first case begins with bones that have lain undiscovered for twenty-five years.
Can Luke take on his first solo case and solve it?
Will Tessa prove to be as good an investigator as she was a DI? Will she solve the mystery of the threatening notes sent to two women, who become murder victims?
As the agency digs deeper into the past and a link between the two cases is revealed, will this help or hinder?

About the author

Anita Waller was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire in 1946. She married Dave in 1967 and they have three adult children.
With many books to her name, she feels she has finally realised her dream. She writes mainly psychological thrillers, but was commissioned in 2018 to write a cosy mystery series, the Kat and Mouse trilogy. By November 2020 this will have grown to five books, plus a spin-off standalone novel called Epitaph, featuring Doris, one of the characters from the series. This series has now led on to a spin-off series, the Connection Trilogy, with books entitled Blood Red, Code Blue and Mortal Green. All her books, which will number twenty by the time Mortal Green is available, have been published by Bloodhound Books.
In 2021 Waller signed a five book deal with Boldwood Books, and as at December 2022 has two published books with them, One Hot Summer and The Family at No.12, with Fatal Secrets, the first in a new series set in Sheffield, due to launch 8th February 2023.
She is now in her mid-seventies, happily writing most days and would dearly love to plan a novel, but has accepted that isn’t the way of her mind. Every novel starts with a sentence and she waits to see where that sentence will take her, and her characters. If writer's block intrudes, be sure there will be a death.
In her life away from the computer in the corner of her kitchen, she is a Sheffield Wednesday supporter with blue blood in her veins!
Her genre is murder - necessary murder.

I was gutted when Anita Waller announced the end of her best selling and much loved Kat and Mouse series, but rejoiced when I found out that it wasn’t the end for some of the characters. In this new series, we see Beth (Mouse), former DI Tessa Marsden and newly qualified investigator Luke, partner together in Connection Investigation Agency.
Blood Red picks up 2 weeks after the events in the last Kat and Mouse book, Murder Unjoyful, so I do recommend you reading this series first or at the very least the last book. You won’t be disappointed!
With Blood Red, Anita Waller has crafted another thrilling mystery to sink your teeth into and is one that kept me hooked and had my undivided attention as her books always do. I was cast alongside the team in solving not only the mystery of the discovery of the bones, but also entangled in the other cases the team faced. I loved the dynamics between the cast and with the addition of ex detective Fred, in charge of security and new receptionist Cheryl, really fit in well with the others and make the story all the more entertaining.
Anita Waller has delivered another perfectly written tale that will hold you captive from start to finish and is another example of why she is one of my all time favourite authors. And that ending, Wow! it couldn’t have been done any better! Blood Red is a fabulous start to this series and look forward to reading more.

Firstly though this is a follow-up to the original Kat and Mouse series, it can be read without reading them. However, I would highly recommend the Kat and Mouse series as not only do they set the background, it is also a fantastic series to read.
As the synopsis has already been discussed in previous reviews I will focus on how wonderful the characters are. Beth and Luke are back, Luke is now a partner and you cannot help but love him. He has the ability to be so gentle and unassuming but nothing gets past him. Tessa is no longer with CID, she too is a partner in the company and a real force to be reckoned with. We also have Fred and Cheryl who are new to the team but already made huge impacts.
I really cannot rate this book highly enough. I read it in one day it was that good. The style of writing is such that you can visualise both the characters and the setting. Personally I feel this series would make a perfect TV adaptation. I have read many books which I have been made into TV such as Morse, Frost and Midsomer and I strongly believe this could be just as successful as those.
This is a fantastic book which I highly recommend. Roll on book 2 in this series.
This was a wonderful introduction to the new agency, and I really liked all the characters and the normality of their personalities. Despite the cozy feel, there were some very interesting cases going on. Between a 25 year-old cold murder case, cheating husbands, vicious stabbings and a suicide, Eyam and it's surroundings is not as tranquil as you'd expect.
A terrific read and I will get onto the second book in this series as soon as I can, and push the other series up towards the top of my next to read pile.
I absolutely love the characters in Blood Red, both the new and the old. Beth, Tessa and Luke were in previous books and it’s so good to catch up with their lives again. New characters Fred, Cheryl and Maria are wonderful additions and I can’t wait to find out how their characters develop.
Back to the story! A twenty five year old murder comes to light and its a little too close to home for Connections not to become involved. Luke is asked to investigate this one, with unexpected results. Meanwhile Tessa is involved in trying to find the writer of anonymous letters which lead to a double murder and her having to approach her cases slightly differently now she is no longer a D.I. Fred’s case involving a cheating husband also has some interesting surprises.
Congratulations on another great book Anita Waller. I can’t wait to find out what is next in store for the team at Connections.
I won't tell the story......I'll leave it to you to enjoy and apparently it's going to be a series. Couldn't be better....something to look forward to. Thanks to Anita for all the enjoyment she gives. !!!!
