From the Author
was built on a simple premise. Does one go against the beliefs they were taught and if they do, what are the consequences? And what if those beliefs are extreme?
Set in the fictional town of Chrysalis, South Carolina (which is also the setting for other works of mine, including The Bell House
and Green Water Lullaby
) we follow the lives of on an ensemble cast: a sheriff investigating a recent murder with connections to a long cold abduction case, the girlfriend of the murder victim, and a young woman coming to grips with her mother's past and its implications.
You will find a strong thread of paranormal here. Chrysalis is no ordinary town, and old grudges between factions remain.
I hope that you enjoy this story of magic, deception, and betrayal.
From the Inside Flap
She was one with the earth, the crawling things, beetles, spiders, and worms, the rhythm of them creating their own singsong. With their mouths and antenna and legs they kept moving. She felt the heaviness of the invisible moon above her, the turning of the earth, a drumbeat slower and deeper than anything heard by human or lupine ear. She could not claw the dirt from her eyes, but sight was of no meaning now. There was no way to move her limbs. Perhaps, she thought, this is the way a swimmer drowned--relaxed, conceding defeat to the elements but at peace with destiny. The only difference being that she was drowning in dirt, and that she was dead to begin with.
