This is an extremely well written and thoroughly sourced overview of the history of indigenous sovereign nations. It covers a huge swath of history, helping interested readers make sense of major events shaping modern Native America. Detractors will complain that some details have been omitted, but at 380 pages and zillions of sources, it's hard to accept that a general overview like this should have even more detail. A triumph of historical writing and a must-have for those eager for a birds-eye view of developments in Indian Country, among Alaska Natives, and briefly in Hawaii, too.

Thsi book ignores the Native Americans in the White House and Len Garment who got funding for NARF, CRLA and OEO and who pulled while the lawyers pushed to get Nixon to sign the resorations when opposed by John Mitchell, Bob Haldeman and other powerful opponents to Restoration . To that extent, credit for the biggest reform and reinstatement of Sovereignty is narrowed and the unsung real heroes who risked their careers by badgering President Nixon will not be told. The fact that the Mexican Americans from California Rural Assistance birthed the restoration movement is also egregiously ommitted. The books other ommission include the clandestive opposition from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. If history is reduced to preferential chronology, it is an untold story.
