C.C. Edge has been writing bits and pieces all her life. Blood Terminal is her first mystery novel. To Edge, civil rights and social equity are the great American paradox, which must be acknowledged in some way whenever a work is set in this country.

While she has been called over-serious at times, Edge doesn’t mind. She believes in taking play as seriously as any other part of life. She is an avid duplicate bridge player and enjoys computer RPGs.

Having worked at a number of publications in Alabama, Tennessee, and Indiana, Edge earned degrees in English and African American and African Diaspora Studies at Indiana University.

Finally getting back to writing more seriously, she found it to be as much work as play. Thankfully, it’s one of those difficult fun things. She hopes her readers find pleasure in her work too.

Easy read, well written, kept my attention

I read only about 2-3 books per year, but I’m really picky about what I read. I’ve started many books, then quit after a while because the writing had too much descriptive detail. I don’t want to read 2 entire pages describing a “meadow” or a “misty morning”. Bores me to death. I want action and insights…not something that goes on and on about how “soft” the clouds look! “Blood Terminal” uses specific key words to “create the scene” making me feel like I was actually there in 1931 experiencing the sights, sounds, smells and prejudices of that period. And the author does it in a paragraph, not an entire page or two. It didn’t bore me, it pulled me in, made me feel a part of it. Very skillful writing in my opinion.
I like courtroom dramas, mysteries and historical novels. This author’s writing style reminded me of John Grisham. A very good thing! Looking forward to her next book.

A murder takes place on the Hummingbird Express as it speeds toward Birmingham. The story unfolds as the author explores the individual characters and divided society in the Jim Crow South during the Depression. She has integrated the details so smoothly that I was surprised when I reaiized that as I was reading, I had absorbed the everyday habits and constraints of the Pullman porters, the railway bosses and workers, and the police, as well as their families. The truth can only emerge in spite of how we do things down here. A great read.

You can read history books about this very important time in our country's history, and you can read this book to gain understanding of this time on a personal level. The book works on so many levels - as a great story with engaging characters and rich dialogue and as a snapshot of a critically important part of our country's history. I was instantly drawn in because of the characters, but also because the time and place are not often utilized in fiction. The ugliness of Jim Crow and the strength of the people who had to live with it are sharply rendered. I know little about trains, but the details of porters and cars and "runs" were made quite clear. Recommended!
