The fact that the story was such a fresh take on the genre immediately got my attention. But what continued to string me along were the wit and the charm of the central anti-hero, namely our vampire. And despite his ruthless nature, the fact that you couldn’t help but empathize with him. I especially loved that he had such a romantic side and up to the end was convinced that his jailors would be only too happy to put his skills to use as a kind of James Bond super-spy. From where he’s sitting, the notion does make a certain amount of sense. Who wouldn’t want to avail themselves of his superpowers to bring in bad guys? Unfortunately for our anti-hero, the police don’t quite see it that way. Leaving him with one option, to escape.
While he’s trapped inside, however, we have a chance to get to know the florid life he’s lived, spanning many eras. And once he’s out of prison he’s headed for another remarkable journey, this time, one that is full of romance.
The author writes in such a way that you do not need to read the prior installment before delving into this one. In fact I was rather surprised, though happy to hear, there was a prior installment.
I came to care for Cameron despite his multiple shortcomings. He is one of those mischievous “golden boys” who are always up to no good and yet they remain lovable no matter how many times they mess up. Only after his escape Cameron finds himself in much more danger than he could have possibly imagined. His sarcasm and musings were a perfect addition to an enthralling plot, and the unorthodox way in which he was presented definitely made “Blood Ties” stand out amongst the books written in the same genre.
If you’re a fan of vampire stories and love dark humor – this story should certainly be on your “to-read” list. Five stars.
The book continues with his various adventures with humans and other vampires. You get a good look at the lonely and brutal live of a vampire, without all the glitter and glamor that goes along with so many other vampire stories.
Although this is part of a series, it can be read by itself. It has a great twist at the end that readers will enjoy, and leads you into Cameron's next adventures.
