Myers has a fabulous way of writing suspenseful love triangles. Should Isa love Roke...he is a vampire for heaven's sake or human Alex? Both are in love with her and she really has feelings for both. This is an ongoing story so cliffhanger BIG time. I can not believe how fast I read this book. I could not put it down. Can not wait for the next book!! Myers is Queen of the Suspenseful Sci-Fi Romance hands down!!!
I originally heard about this book on Kindle Scout and I voted for it based on the synopsis and an excerpt. It didn’t make it, but I preordered it when I was alerted to its upcoming release. NOWHERE does it say anything about a love triangle, although to be fair, maybe I should have picked up on the hint when it compared itself to Twilight. *sigh* A perfectly good story ruined by a adolescent melodramatic “love” triangle. We have Roke the vampire and Alex the human pirate....both head over heels for the girl they’ve been hearing about for years and occasionally spying on. Then there’s “not so sweet” Isa who is just so drawn to them both and just can’t decide who to drop her pants for...but never fear she’ll keep kissing and teasing them both. Can you tell I don’t like love triangles? I think it’s a cheap way for an author to create drama, but this went beyond the pale and just made my eyes roll so often I was afraid they’d get stuck and I’d be staring at the inside of my skull the rest of my life. She spent so much time on this idiotic “who will she pick” nonsense that she faltered in her world building. What could have been a kickass urban fantasy based around an apocalyptic disease that let the Vampires rise to power....along with some creative genetic alterations turned into a mishmash of teenage melodrama and incomplete story. Hinting at the back story does not fulfill the duties of creating the world. You need to hook your readers, and by the end I was not only ticked by the cliffhanger wannabe ending but indifferent to ALL the characters. My guess is in a week I won’t remember this book at all....and on the off chance I do have some lingering memory that sticks with me until book two comes out I know for a fact I would be reading the reviews before purchase....if she continues with this stupid love triangle I won’t be wasting my money on book 2. If she gets a better editor who gets her to focus on world building and less on romance I might come back because the premise has so much promise.
Isabelle's life changed when she was young and a virus took over. It gave way for the vampires to take over and herd the humans into their cities. The enforced marriages and mating of all women of child-bearing age. She was lucky and got matched with someone she actually liked, but shortly after their marriage he began to change...becoming addicted to the vampire's bite, and getting in way over his head. It's about here the story begins and it's also when Isabelle's life takes a completely different route.
"Next time, I strip for you, and we won't have an audience."
Roke is a vampire who was charged with keeping an eye over Isabelle. For years he's watched her without her knowledge. He fell for her without ever having said a word to her. Then he has to step out of the shadows and protect her from other vampires who want her. He's in love with her and would never let anything happen to her, but if he could also make her fall for him then everything would be perfect.
"Okay, let's go to my place."
"I wish you said that under different circumstances and that you appeared happier about it."
Isa groaned. "Do you ever stop flirting?"
"With you? No. Us vampires have great endurance."
She grinned reluctantly. "Awful. Just awful."
He smiled, a wicked gleam in his eyes. "But you liked it."
Alex is human and pretty much falls for Isabelle the moment she steps onto his boat. He has no problem stepping up every time Roke steps back. He wants to teach her, protect her, and love her, but he knows how she feels about Roke and he doesn't want to be a third wheel.
"Last thing I want to do is hurt anyone, especially you."
"Why especially me?"
"You know why."
"Say it. I need to hear it. You have no idea how much I need to hear it."
"Because you f***ing slept with Roke."
Tensions get hot between these three at times and oh how it makes for a really good read. They are both alpha males who flirt endlessly, sometimes to the point where all you can do is laugh. Too bad she can't pick them both!
On top of their little love triangle, you have people trying to kidnap Isabelle, you have ones who just plain want her dead and are trying to kill her, and you have a tangled web of lies and betrayals that will keep you glued to the pages. Although I did receive an ARC that wasn't completely edited and had an occasional typo Blood Will Tell was a suspenseful read that kept my interest throughout the entire book and left me ready for book two. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
