An ancient grudge. A forbidden love.
The only thing worse than being a demon is being a Valari. As an undergraduate at Los Angeles’s Alameda University, Kara Valari can sometimes succeed at forgetting she’s both. Lost between the pages of the classics and tucked into the shadows of lecture halls, she can dodge the paparazzi’s lenses as well as her family’s publicized dramas—not to mention their private expectations. She has one more year to feed her true passions. Then she’ll be expected to fulfill a much darker destiny.
Cursed with inexplicable strength and godlike stature, literature professor Maximus Kane knows all about darkness. Every day he’s reminded of the missteps of his childhood and the devastating consequences they’ve had on those dearest to him. To atone, Maximus spends his nights alone and his days submerged in the quiet life of academia. His existence has become a study in control, and he’s become a master at it—until Kara Valari walks into his toughest course.
Viscerally, Kara’s everything he craves. Logically, she’s everything he rejects. She’s a starlet of privilege. She’s also a student. And after one touch, he can’t deny that she’s awakened something in him that may never go dormant. Nothing about her makes sense, but everything about her feels right. Especially in the deepest strands of his DNA, which are still shadows of mystery to him—a mystery Kara seems determined to uncover.
She’s Hollywood royalty. She’s forbidden fruit. And he’s pretty sure she could be the answer to everything.

I actually loved the start of it, and how it is kind of a role reversal type of book. The heroine is a bit more forward type of character (actually she only was in the beginning), rich, a demon with a bit more mysterious past, and who is in an arranged engagement. The hero grew up poor, doesn't really know who he is, trying to figure out who the heroine is most of the book, and has to face more hurdles to be with the heroine (something I'm excited for there to be in book 2) Totally my type of book. But as the book went on, their personalities and who they are, just became a bit bland.
Such as since she is a demon, I expected her to maybe be somewhat experienced or promiscuous, so I was VERY disappointed when we found out the heroine was a virgin, even if it was for a reason. And then the hero, I think I was expecting a bit more darkness or alpha-ness, or have a broody nature to him, maybe just to spice things up a bit, but he was actually probably one of the nicest characters ever LOL, even a bit naive.
I wish I could give this one a 5 star too, but so many things were lacking and it was a bit disappointing. One would be the teacher/student trope. I so hoped it was a bigger part of the story, or at least have an age gap between them, which there wasn't really one sadly. The book was actually a sweeter, less angst and drama, type of book. Like a coffee shop type of read. There were some sexy parts, and I think the forbidden-ness was supposed to cause more angst, bur it didn't really. Everything, including the romance, was just pretty calm and sweet. The calm before the storm maybe?
Another thing that bothered me, was the lack of details. For example, descriptions and their ages, which were total mysteries the entire book. I'm guessing she's in her early 20's since she's in college. The hero mentioned he was young to be a professor, and he acts pretty young too. We finally find out at the end that he is 27 from the heroine who tells the reader that actually, and I'm just a little confused how she even knew how old he was when they literally don't have any conversations about details of themselves like that. I also expected him to be a bit older...
I'm also confused on the hero's past? So here is this super strong dude who mentioned he has to be super careful about humans and how he wishes he can have more contact. Then we have his friend making fun of him because he's never with a woman or even entertains them, and the hero makes comments of how he prefers courting women and that sex isn't everything. So I'm thinking, if this dude is scared of being even close to his best friend for example, that maybe he's more innocent with sex. Maybe not a virgin, but just more inexperienced? Especially because every comment the best friend makes about him, sounds like the hero is legit never with women and the hero couldn't rebuff it. But then all of a sudden we get to when they're together, and he says how it's more special with her than anyone he has ever been with, and just how at ease he is with sex, and it just seemed like he's been with a lot more women than he let on. Then he has condoms in his nightstand, which I was under the impression he didn't bring women back to his apartment because again, the friend insinuated that. I'm fine with his sex past, but I just needed more details on it and how he was able to be with women at all because of his strength. It was all just too vague.
The last thing that bothered me, was I felt like the characters were wishy washy. Their thoughts and decisions constantly contradicted their actions when it came to each other. Or they would make a decision and stick to it for legit like only a second. Or the heroine for example, who was the main pursuer at first, she chases him but everytime they get too close, she completely backs out and is running away, which got pretty annoying.
So overall, although I did really enjoy this book, I think i was just expecting more out of it. So many things were just too vague or rushed, and the development was a bit off. I do love the premise of the book though, and the uniqueness of it, and I'm still super excited for the next book, though I will probably wait to read it until the last book comes out.
Also, worth the price for the paperback, but not really for the ebook IMO.
Wild and Payne, are new authors for me. I picked this book up from synopsis read on a social media ad, and it was every bit as exciting and romantic as it promised. It was also chock full of unexpected twists that kept me wondering what could possibly happen next. Who is Maximus and Kara? Why the secrets? A million other questions popped up as I turned page after page. As the obstacles mount and disaster seems the only conclusion, I held my breath to see what could possibly happen to save our lovers. Well, you just have to read Blood of Zeus yourself, because I refuse to spoil the pleasure, I am sure you will experience!
I am especially delighted by the wonderful world that the authors crafted. Magically, Ms. Wild and Ms. Payne, transported me to Hollywood. Their vivid descriptions, showed me not just the glamour I have seen many times from afar, but the underbelly of secrets and lies covered by glitter and sequins. It was masterful demonstration of word craft.
I also was easily drawn to the main characters, Maximus and Kara. The character development both of the main characters and the wonderful support cast was astounding. It was like being front and center in an award winning stage play! Bravo! Encore please!
My only complaint is that of course, as a series of novels, Blood of Zeus ends in a cliffhanger. As I have a shelf of other to be read books, I reluctantly have to wait before I can dive into book 2. However, book 2, Heart of Fire, is available from Amazon, and could be purchased immediately if you wish to continue this exciting romance series! And I do plan to continue the series, soon!
The lead characters jumped off the pages and into my head straight away when I started reading. Maximus seemed larger-than-life and oh so hot! I just couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I needed to know everything about him. I found Kara interesting--one minute in-your-face bold and the next minute a bit held back, quiet and reserved. I knew it would be just a matter of time before she relinquished some of her reservations and tried to grab what she wanted, or should I say, who she wanted--Maximus! Of course, Kara didn't go unnoticed by Maximus either. Their magnetic attraction is no good for either of them. He's her college professor. However, no matter how much they try, they can't ignore the pull between them. Why is that? Is it simply a physical attraction? Or is it something different, deeper?
I thought the story was very well-written, with concise descriptions creating clear pictures in my mind of the characters and their actions. This is not your run-of-the-mill couple. Apparently Gods and Demons walk amongst humans in modern-day Los Angeles, and therein, the story begins. Blood of Zeus is a multi-book PNR that fascinates and hijacks your imagination keeping you turning the pages. This first book deals mostly with the developing relationship and love between Maximus and Kara and sets the stage for what is to come. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series and finding out how their love story will evolve since it sounds like it's going to be an action-packed, push-pull, fight to the end for their HEA. If you love paranormal romances, and I do, I'd say two thumbs-up for Blood of Zeus. Grab it today!
