Here we meet Jessica while she is still living at the compound. I read this novella after the second book. I wanted to know Jessica a bit more before I knew her past.
It was amazing to see her as a teenager fighting for her life and her freedom. She was amazing and brave, and fearless.
Series reading order is: Blooded (Jessica McClain, #0.5), Full Blooded (Jessica McClain, #1), Hot Blooded (Jessica McClain, #2), Cold Blooded (Jessica McClain, #3), Red Blooded (Jessica McClain, #4), and Pure Blooded (Jessica McClain, #5).
Jessica is human, born to a werewolf family. Living in a male dominated wolf world. And oh yes, they all want to kill her because of the Prophecy. The Prophecy basically says that Jessica will bring about the end of werewolf kind. So naturally the men want to kill her.
Jessica has always known that she is not well liked. The only people who care about her are her brother, Tyler, friends Nick and James who are apart of the pack, and naturally her father who is the alpha.
Jessica tries to get her father to let her leave the pack so she can get away from all the hostility and death threats/attempts. But he is reluctant. We watch twice as Jessica battles for her life. Trying to prove herself. Things get pretty scary...maybe a little hairy too. But not on Jessica's account since she cannot shift.
It was a quick read, but very good story building. It's nice to take everything in, get a glimpse of the characters we are about to meet.
Two things that I truly enjoyed about this story was 1: there was a Princess Bride reference--sadly it was not Inigio's famous lines, or my lines that I choose from him, but still in a roundabout way it does relate to Inigio. 2: and this one is pretty obvious, the heroine has a killer name! ;)
Nineteen year old Jessica McClain is at the end of her rope. Born the only female to a werewolf in an all male race, she's called a freak, a curse and the Daughter of Evil by the superstitious wolves in Pack, but thanks to her Alpha father, twin and friends, James, Nick and Danny, she's managed to keep the wolves from attacking her constantly. When an attempt against her life leaves her battered and bruised, her father will have no choice but to set her free, or continue to cause his daughter harm.
Blooded starts us of with the nitty gritty. Jessica is getting her butt kicked and good. But human or not, she's unwilling to go down without a fight. Being that she's up against a full blooded werewolf in his human form, she's definitely no match for the brutal onslaught, but Jessica's sending out a message, that she'll always fight back. We get to meet Jessica's sexy twin brother, Trey. The enigmatic and ever charming, Danny. The werefox Nick, who because of his difference in species has always been bullied as well but has become her best friend. And the utterly delicious James, Pack's second in command. We also see who the superstitious wolves are and what they believe Jessica's presence signifies for their race.
Blooded is a short but fascinating read about a young girl determined to stay alive in a world that has never accepted her, and though she's had willing body guards all her life, her life is still in danger. I loved Blooded because of its intensity. Though it's a prequel, it has given me a better understanding as to what life with werewolves has meant for Jessica. I recommend this book to be read first, as it was recommended to me by Mariya [*thanks, hon*], for anyone about to start the Jessica McClain series
Jessica challenges one of the shifters that hate her to prove herself, but she ends up putting herself in danger even more. Until one day her father is forced to accept Jessica's offer to leave the compound, after she is brutally attacked by one werewolf who wants her dead after she challenged another.
Jessica is one kick butt female who knows how to take care of herself. She's trying everything to live in a world of males who hate her and she is trying to prove to everyone she can take care of herself. Her father is in denial on what is going on in his compound.
She has been trying to tell him and his second command that she's no longer safe at the compound.
Amanda Carlson gives you a short novella that is full of action, blood, and humor.
She gives you a female who can outwit and challenge the best alpha males out there.
She may even scare you with how strong and determined she is...I know I was intimidated and she's only a fictional character.
I loved this prequel of Jessica McClain and look forward to reading "Full Blooded" even more now.
If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy and want to read about a kick butt heroine that challenges her werewolf kind with strength and wits...then you'll enjoy this short novella from Amanda Carlson.
I believe I have found a female heroine who may be my TOP fave kick butt heroine since I started reading the urban fantasy genre. Look forward to reading more of Jessica McClain's story.
