"Hot Blooded is a fantastic addition to a series that has basically everything I want from my urban fantasy: Layered world-building, pulse-racing action, witty writing and characters that grow." (Vampire Book Club)
"...Carlson has a talent for taking all these complex threads and winding them round the strong center strand of narrative that keeps a reader turning pages. McClain is a kick-ass heroine fumbling her way along the path of becoming a legendary figure. Her choices lead her into and through scenes that generate breath-stealing excitement, fueled by a powerful motive." (Fresh Fiction)

Second book continues exactly where the first one stops. There is no gap in the story and I love it. So unless you plan to stop reading the series, we can't really talk about cliffhangers. However, I must have been frustrating reading the books when they were coming out one by one. Good news is that they are all out now and you can just keep on reading.
Jessica is getting a good grip on her powers in this book. Her character is developing as is the world. The supporting characters are all there and we get to know them better and love them.
I have to warn you that there is violence and it is very adequately described. Jessica fights against all odds and it is amazing to read. There is so much action, it was mind blowing. This book was even better than the first one. At this point I decided to read the prequel.
Series reading order is: Blooded (Jessica McClain, #0.5), Full Blooded (Jessica McClain, #1), Hot Blooded (Jessica McClain, #2), Cold Blooded (Jessica McClain, #3), Red Blooded (Jessica McClain, #4), and Pure Blooded (Jessica McClain, #5).
This probably could have been enough to be entertaining but I found it irritating as Jessica seems to discover a new power to defeat each obstacle. Lots of oaths sworn for this reason or that. Lots of talking to her wolf in her head, yada yada yada. Dialogue that at times felt robotic.... Overall, it just felt "hokey".
And predictable... so much so, that I skimmed half the book! Doubt this will be much of a spoiler since it is so predictable, but she doesn't reach &rescue her mate until the last 25% of the book, which was a little better but not much. And they still don't get to consummate their mating - but I'm not sure I care.
Jessica's character just seems to have morphed into an unknown all powerful being who one minutes seems to miraculously solve dire situations, but the next minute is making really dumb decisions because she's SO virtuous and determined to save the world, including Ray! What was that all about!? I mean, pleeease, figure out a way to contain him for a bit and go do your big rescue mission! I mean don't get me wrong, I kinda liked the jerk Ray, and I still liked Tyler and Danny, Naomi was a nice addition, and I liked Rourke, what little we saw of him, but I feel I really wasted my time on this installment. And unfortunately, I have a strong feeling the next might be more of the same since a couple of characters go missing at the end of this book, so I suspect yet another rescue mission...sigh.
Maybe, just maybe it will be a little better since she'll hopefully advance her relationship with Rourke and have him by her side this time, as well as the others. And there's still the guard duty she has to perform for the Vamp Queen. But I'll definitely wait for reviews to decide if I'll read the next.
With the help of her brother - Tyler - her pack mate - Danny - two vampires - Naomi and Eamon - and Detective Ray, they start their journey north into a very dangerous territory.
It was non stop action with crazy supernatural creatures coming out of nowhere challenging Jess to acknowledge her powers and becoming one with her wolf. There was even some reanimated goats.
Rourke only comes into play at the very end of the book :( I hope to see more of him in the next one.
There were many new and interesting plots being created that will make for awesome future books.
I love this series and can't wait for more.
NO: Am I glad that I PAID for the book?
NO: Was there good and realistic CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?
YES: Was the PLOT logical and/or interesting?
NO: Would I buy the AUDIOBOOK or REREAD the story because I enjoyed it so much?
Carlson has created a varied universe that should provide lots of scenarios to play with, BUT ..........
the SOPHOMORIC DIALOG and fuzzy logic just ruined the possible "reality" of these characters and universe.
Jessica's powers come to her TOO EASILY and right out of the gate she is able to defeat the greatest foes. Where is the challenge in that?
What really bothers me is that when the characters are in the middle of a battle, they take time out to not only have a conversation but a stupid one at that.
WHEN ONE IS IN A BATTLE, YOU DON'T HAVE A HEART-TO-HEART!
I might try book #3 but I will wait for it come to the library.
