About the Author

After earning a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling, Tracy worked in the clinical field before becoming a full-time writer. Marriage to a Naval Aviator for over twenty-five years has provided fodder for her imagination, especially the tours she spent traveling the globe on diplomatic orders in Rome and Madrid. Now settled back in sunny San Diego, she writes gritty romance novels, spanning genres across paranormal, historical, and military suspense. Tracy is also the founder and creator of THE CHARACTER COUCH (www.charactercouch.com), a reader-focused website designed to help fans keep in touch with their favorite fictional characters by providing fun monthly “therapy” sessions for a selected couple. Tracy’s a foodie and wine enthusiast, and when she’s not writing, she’s an avid dancer and tennis player. She has two children and a variety of pets at any one given time.

Complex and engrossing, I will be re-reading this one again! A word of warning: this volume ends without any resolution and there is no release date for the sequel!

I'm beyond stunned that so many claim to love this series and claim it is a close second to Black Dagger Brotherhood. While JR Ward takes the time to build the world, the back stories, the history, the character development in her BDB series, Tracy Tappan's world building is a mess. It feels like this was possibly a BDB fanfiction that got traction. There are many elements of the book that seem to almost rely on the reader's working knowledge of BDB. There aren't parallels necessarily, just a need for blind acceptance rather than the author taking time to provide the background in an authentic, organic way. The language vacillates from silly to vulgar, for example. As though the reader is supposed to inherently understand that the Varolac society is formal and old fashioned, their good doctor seemingly suggested to be the same type of high society uptight priss as the vampire doctor in BDB, but with no background given. The alpha males say things like "grody" and yet are also described to want to ball the female heroine against a wall. That, with no sympathetic emotional build up between the reader and this world, is IMO quite "grody."

I feel mislead.

I would suggest BDB fans skip this series, and just re-read BDB while we await The Beast.

Ugg!! I'm incredibly disappointed in this series. It's been touted all over social media as the next Black Dagger Brotherhood series. NOT!! The story line was okay, but it was a rushed, misshapen execution of a love story. I didn't feel like I ever got a grip on who any of the characters were as people. The story felt short and shallow with a dark menacing quality that left a bad aftertaste. The author kept saying what good people the Varcolac...aka vampires...we're, but she never really convinced me. Sure, the other non-human antagonists were shown to be really bad guys but if the Varcolac are only good in comparison to raping thugs.... yeah doesn't really play well for me personally. I started the second book because I had bought the first two at the same time willing to keep trying to find the good stuff. I stopped within the first chapter of the second book, gave up and deleted both books after more women were raped. I know there are people out there who love dark, raw fantasy but not me. I think the author has potential but it wasn't fulfilled in these two books. Dull characters, non-fleshed out story lines, left me as the reader confused a time or two on what had just happened, why and how it was even resolved. Being told some situation has resolved is just not the same as being shown how or why and how the characters dealt with it on an internal level. Left me dissatisfied enough I actually felt I needed to write a review because I didn't read the same book all these five star reviewers did that's for sure.

Tracy Tappan was a new author to me – probably because this is her first published work (her website lists a total of 7 books, six of those marked as “coming soon”). After this many years you would think that the whole vampire thing would be stagnant – however, Tracy Tappan has found a way to repackage the mythology and added in additional paranormal creatures to keep it fresh and engaging. The book starts out strong and just keeps going with the action and suspense! Throw in the need to fan yourself from the smexy scenes, the need to keep it down when you have to laugh out loud and the “awwwww” factor of the sweet & lovey scenes… and this will move quickly to the top of your Favorites list! With special pricing during this tour of just 99 cents, my advice? DON'T DELAY, BUY TODAY!

I LOVED THIS BOOK! (And boy, can Tracy write a hero!)

The story was so full of twists even from the very first chapter. I thought I knew the direction it was going, (because I have read my fair share of vampire novels), but I was completely wrong. That's what was so refreshing about this book. Also, the mythology surrounding the vampires is unlike any that I have read before, which was also refreshing.

I also like how not just the main characters were featured in the story. I learned about the lives of other minor characters who, hopefully, will get their own books in the series! Each male was SO alpha, and yet so devoted to his woman, family and duty. I also want to know what happens not only with the war itself, but with the singles who are still single at the end of the book!

Jacken is one of my all-time favorite heroes. He is so dark and tortured, and yet it's clear that he has so much good in him that just needs a way to come to the surface.

I would absolutely keep reading this series. Tracy is a very talented writer; not only is the book well-written in a technical sense, but she had me almost chomping at the bit to see what happened next! I found myself limiting the number of pages I read to make the book last longer, but before I knew it, I was done!

I am eagerly awaiting the next installment, and I am now a HUGE Tracy-fan!!!
