At times the dialogue is very proper, which is indicative of the age of the vampires, but less so with the way we would expect teenagers today to speak (I have one, trust me they barely speak in complete sentences, let alone use proper English!). There are a lot of unique twists to vampires, but a lot of things that felt very much the same as every other vampire story. But the author definitely shows a lot of potential for telling a great story. In the author’s acknowledgements she thanks her translators; which if that means what I think it means, it explains why some of the words and phrases seemed out of place. Translation isn’t always kind to the written word. There were times I was actually confused about where the setting of the story really was; all based on the dialogue. But once you get used to her writing style it’s easy to get more into the story.
The love triangle between Declan, Anya, and Nicholas kind of creeped me out…I can’t even really explain why it made me feel uneasy. It just did. Most of the characters you get to know a little bit about them to understand their relationship to everyone else… except Star. They refer to her as “the bloodless one” but nowhere are you given any clue as to what she really is. Since this is a series, perhaps we will find out later on, but since she was such an integral character in this book I found it a little odd that it was never really explained.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and if you are a fan of Twilight I would say you would enjoy this one as well. I do think that the author shows a lot of potential and look forward to seeing how she improves with each book.
Full of Action and Suspense what a ride and yet another wonderful spin on vampires. Uncovering the secrets it Anya's past will keep you glued. Anya though only a teen in human years is actually a very old vampire trying to live amongst the humans and live a normal life. Easier said than done though. With amazing characters fantastic detail and a world that I can not wait to explore again Áine has it all right here in this series. This story is so full of action that you will buzz right through it before you know and want more of these characters.
Anya is not your normal vampire she has a killer voice, but this is a spoiler free zone so make sure you grab yourself a copy.
Then there's Nicholas. Nicholas is another vegetarian vampire. He's known Anya for a long time, known her since before she disappeared and returned with amnesia. Nicholas and Anya are not just good friends, before Anya disappeared they had shared blood and created a blood bond too.
But Anya's past looks to have finally caught up with her. Can Anya and both her vampire and human friends overcome Anya's past or will the Educators finally win?
The synopsis for Blood's Voice intrigued me, so I signed up for the tour and found myself immersed in Anya's world.
I'm going to start by saying I really enjoyed this book. At the start I found there to be a few similarities to another vampire book/film series, but that doesn't last very long. Once past those similarities I was able to get fully into the story.
It did take me a little while to adjust to Áine Massie's writing style; not because its bad just because it was different to my recent reads; but once I had gotten used to it, I was off and running.
The story's pacing is good and seems to have a relatively natural flow. There is a fair amount of dialogue; which for the most part is good; I don't mind dialogue so the amount doesn't bother me. However, there were a few places where the dialogue felt too formal or a bit forced. I understand that Anya is a centuries old vampire in the body of a 16 year old, but I did struggle a few times to picture her saying some parts.
Anya, Nicholas and Declán, this is a triangle with a difference in that Anya and Nicholas are vampires that share a blood bond and are mates. Anya and Declán; feelings develop feelings for each other, Declán is then bound to Anya by blood; which causes Declán to be bound to Nicholas too. Most of the intimate moments are kept as either Anya and Nicholas, or Anya and Declán. There is only one which has Anya, Nicholas and Declán together, and its portrayed very tastefully.
Áine Massie has created a very believable plot and set of characters. This is a story of romance, action, mystery and suspense. I'm looking forward to reading book 2.
