I was hooked from the beginning. “If I could talk, like the humans observing me right now, I’d reply to their exclamations of delight and wonder. I know I’m an amazing creation…”
I’m an amateur when it comes to art but know just enough to recognize creativity when I see it and of course, what I like and enjoy. Ms. Mattana obviously loves art and history and, in this creative project, demonstrates her mastery of both subjects in the context of a well-developed short story that is one that any lover of the arts will enjoy.
Mattana is an expert story teller and captures and maintains reader attention without immersing him/her in unnecessary backstory. Instead, she intricately meshes her storyline with details that only a master story teller can bring to the written page.
I look forward to the development of what appears to be a new series and commend the author on this great introduction.
This is a fascinating tale of conspiracy and revenge, all surrounding a painting commissioned in 1500.
Although a short story, the author has managed to portray the history of this famous painting. If you love history, mystery, and art, this story is for you.
The one telling us about this story is an unlikely witness: the canvas.
While the painter works on it, the canvas sees and listens to Raffaello’s and Donna Atalanta’s conversations, revealing to the reader the dramatic events of the Bloody Wedding.
The author succeeds in entering the historical context, thanks to the use of a high register that imitates the talk of the time without exaggerating. At the same time this register highlights how the narrating voice, although being a painting created in 1500, still exists, has been witnessing the passing of centuries, and as a result, the way it speaks to the reader has evolved.
The ending of this little pearl by Mattana connects to her previous works and leaves you with a smile.

This tale leads into a touch base with current characters from her Chase Williams cozy mystery series
