About the Author

David Hemmings was working in repertory theatre by the age of 17. He was married for the first of four times and a father by 18. When he was cast to play in 'Blow Up', he was just 25 with over 30 films already under his belt. David's life was one of almost unbelievable breadth and vividness, which he has observed and recorded with sardonic and self-deprecating wit, bequeathing us one of the most unusual and entertaining memoirs of the movie business to emerge in the last twenty years.

David Hemmings was an excellent actor who just never seemed to have gotten that one part that let him really shine. So he made the most of the parts he got, even the stinkers. But even that aside, he was an interesting fellow with a VERY interesting life, who directed a lot of series and movies that people might not even be aware of, and fans of Hemmings, especially, will find this book overflowing with lots of juicy details straight from his own mouth. He wrote this book shortly before his death, and luckily for us he took the time to pen his thoughts. It is also the sad tale of an alcholic who never quite beat the disease. There are many classic moments of pranks he pulled that are uproariously hilarious, as well. It's a well-made autobiography from beginning to end, and an interesting read even for people who aren't serious Hemmings fans, but it is definitely a must-own for any fan of this charming, talented actor.

For a while there, David Hemmings was the epitome of male beauty, as least as far as this girl is concerned. He made some questionable film choices (actually, some were really good, but not necessarily commercial) and his career steadily went downhill, moving him into directing and production of popular and stupid tv shows (The A-Team, etc.) Hemmings was very smart -- perhaps too much so -- and had such a crappy childhood that its damage carried way into adulthood and affected the various families he created and left. His drinking and notorious philandering didn't help either.

Hemmings is dead, but when I read this outrageous and very witty little book, I felt is if he were standing next to me, personally telling me his story -- his voice carries through that powerfully. Nothing here bores. His style reminds me of Christopher Hitchens (another womanizer) but he is always, always gentlemanly in discussing his wives, girlfriends and is matter of fact to owning up to bad behavior (hiding from his wife, half-naked in his assistant's closet) and wasted opportunities. At the end, he seems to have made peace with what was and what was not. Given that he died shortly before the book was published. that should be a comfort to his fans and a reminder for all of us to do a personal review.

The book is illustrated with some wonderful drawings he did, as well as family photos. If you are a Hemmings fan, you can't get better than this.

I had been looking for this book for a long time. It was out of print and unavailable when I first started looking with used copies in the $200.00 plus bracket. When it became available I purchased it straight away. I must admit that I am a little disappointed in the book. I like David Hemmings work on the screen and learnt alot about him that I didn't know, his directing skills and the shows he directed for example. David Hemmings tells his life story and seems to hold back nothing but I have read it all before. Childhood days, teenage days and adult days. The book is good but after reading about "Blow Up" in the early stages of the book it seemed to slow down from here on in. Good but not great.
