Blowing America's Mind: A True Story of Princeton, CIA Mind Control, LSD and Zen Perfect Paperback – December 1, 2017
Enhance your purchase
Not since A Beautiful Mind has there been a true story involving Princeton and altered states of consciousness - but unlike the story of the breakdown of a Princeton professor, in Blowing America's Mind the dose of madness is deliberately induced in Princeton students at the nearby (and now defunct) New Jersey Neuro-Psychiatric Institute under the guise of expanding consciousness, attaining nirvana, and improving sex lives.
Jeremy Kagan, Professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts and Chairperson of Special Projects for the Directors Guild of America describes Blowing America's Mind as: "a fascinating journey of love, drugs and covert governmental intrigue. Suspenseful in documenting the impact of the 'Psychedelic Revolution' at Princeton in the late 1960 s, the book is a complex, poignant drama detailing CIA-sponsored hypnosis and LSD research, as the famous all-male Ivy League university is on the eve of going coed and on the edge of imploding."
How did America's CIA get caught up in things like psychedelics, deep hypnosis - and Princeton student life? This historic entanglement of the CIA, deep hypnosis, LSD and the Ivy League happened because the CIA in the 1950's and 1960's experimented with new devious ways to impact the minds of its enemies - both foreign and domestic - including its own retiring agents (to erase memories of classified information), and also supposedly-dangerous internal hostiles ... such as college kids fighting against Vietnam War atrocities. The secret program was called MK-ULTRA, and the well known Princeton alumni who co-authored this book were among the guinea pigs.
For fifty years, no one has stepped forward to reveal the insider true story of how innocent Princeton students got caught up in and nearly done in by the CIA s late-sixties LSD-laced hypnotic research. Now the story's out in the open.
The co-authors feel that their book is a true-to-life One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest with a touch of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.

About the author

When I was ten, living way out in nowhere on a cattle ranch, my grandmother gave me a portable electric typewriter - the first year Smith Corona sold them. And just like that, I was hooked. Now that I'm hitting seventy, with fifty books in print in a bunch of languages, the flow of my life seems to have been a fanciful leap from my country origins. Born into the fourth generation of cattle ranchers in California and Arizona, I actually did the work of a cowboy while growing up - and it was not glamorous at all.
At sixteen, in 1960, I went to South Africa for a year as an exchange student - that was a trip! And two years later I was eager to head east to Princeton. From then on it was non-stop change ... government-funded EEG mind/psychedelic research in the late sixties ... meditation and mind-brain exploration and research plus working as a therapist in the seventies ... several year-long journeys south into Indian realms in Mexico and Guatemala (where I felt most at home).
In the eighties, frustrated with American politics and materialism, I moved my base of operations to Europe, working as a therapist, educator and writer in West Berlin where people were seriously eager to plunge into the new meditation and mind-management methods I'd been developing. Also while in Europe (after a number of fulfilling and enlightening but not-quite-right relationships) I finally found the love of my life in Switzerland ...
After securing a 24-book 'self-help library' contract for the German market, off we went to Hawaii to start a family (most fulfilling of all) and go deeper into mind-brain explorations. In the late '80s this culminated in the creation of the early online BrightMind Network, and the very beginnings of what would come to be called The WizeWell Process.
But - ever since I wrote my first novel at 19, my primary love was always writing fiction. For many years I wrote radical stuff that didn't get published. After my Guatemalan adventure in 1979-80, I wrote Powerpoint for Warner Books - but my editor tried to stuff me into her popular occult-horror genre, and I revolted. I had a similar experience after studying in the early AFI program - I was writing spiritual-awakening screenplays, and they just weren't selling. My fiction/mythic novels and screenplays continued mostly underground while I wrote non-fiction books related to my ongoing therapy work.
Those twenty years of near-wilderness island living (we built our own house on Kauai way out in the jungle) were deep incubative times for me - experimenting both with fiction and also music composition, then audio and video-guidance programs for meditation and personal growth. This was also a time of deep Hawaiian hula studies, and the evolution of the 4 stories that would finally emerge, just recently, as the Jack Hadley suspense series. I also wrote 3 new 'healer' screenplays which didn't take off in Hollywood, mostly because I refused to move there and push and modify my stuff (basic personality fault).
Our boys grew up and went to college in California at Santa Cruz, and after almost 20 years in paradise, Birgitta and I moved 8 years ago to Santa Cruz - where finally the times seemed right for my 'cognitive shifting' and innovation-activation training to be well received. During the last decade I'd been finalizing my life work developing short-form awareness-expansion techniques and Focus Phrase methods for quickly quieting the mind and shifting into present-moment engagement and enjoyment. The apps available at www.mindfullyhigh.com and www.mindfullyhere.today have emerged from this recent phase. I feel fulfilled on that front now - and have formally parted ways with Silicon Valley buffs.
Quite a number of related non-fiction books emerged along the way - and now Birgitta and I are also helping ghostwrite and edit and publish books of friends with valuable things to say. My most recent novel, THE JADE PHALLUS, is just now available on Amazon. And I'm working on THE SECOND CHAKRA and MAHEE SPEAKS as my next book projects.

This was just the tip of the iceberg. There was a lot of experimentation with LSD dosing of unsuspecting citizens. At one point a Cadillac was driven around New York City to see if that would be a possible way of delivering drug to unsuspecting passers by. There was a psychiatric hospital in Canada that was run by a Dr. Cammeron where he practiced what he called "psychic driving" where he would place football helmets equiped with head sets opon patients and feed them endless doses of LSD and amphetamines for weeks on end, depriving these poor souls of sleep and filling their ears with demoralizing repeated statements, played over and over. The goal was to see what it would take to completely deprogram a patient and then give them a new personality. One man came to pick up his wife when she was released and she was no longer potty trained and was left a vegetable.
There have been many books written on this subject, most notably ACID DREAMS by Martin A. Lee and Bruce Shlain, OPERATION MIND CONROL by Walter Bowart, and two wonderful books by Jim Keith (who apparently died under mysterious circumstances), MASS CONTROL:ENGINEERING HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS and MIND CONTROL, WORLD CONTROL. There have also been books written by victims of these experiments, one of the earliest of which wasTHE CONTROL OF CANDY JONES, Candy Jones being the stage name of Jessica Wilcox, wife of New York radio talk show host Long John Nebel. Others followed including TRANCE FORMATION OPF AMERICA: THE TRUE STORY OF A MIND CONTROL SLAVE byCathy O'Brian, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES...THE TRUTH HAS SET ME FREE! MEMORIES OF BOB HOPE'S AND HENRY KISSINGER'S MIND-CONTROLLED SLAVE by Brice Taylor, and DVDs such as REVELATIONS OF A MOTHER GODDESS where conspiracy writer Davd Icke interviews mind control victim Jenifer Green who claimed to be programed by none other than the "Angel of Death" himself, Joseph Mengele. Though this type of literature is facinating (and quite possibly true), especially when one considers the famous people being implicated in these atrocities, the very nature of this sensational literature makes it suspect to the general public, and as such, ignored as the creations of crackpots.
However with BLOWING THE MIND OF AMERICA we have two authors who can back up their story and have each established sucessful careers and have no need to gain fame and fortune from their revelations, like so many attempt to do in the conspiracy or paranormal fields. Having attended the University of Arkansas in the late 60s and early 70s, their description of college life during that period of hippies and pot and psychedelics brought back fond memories. Some of my most important coming of age experiences that happened at that time still influence me to this day. Most importantly it was the time I began experimenting with LSD and mescaline. Although I'd had an interest in the paranormal since the age of four and had come from a religous family, it was these trips that deepened my understanding of the wonder of life and that there had to be a Creator, a Divine Intelligence behind it all. During these voyages I had my first out of body experiences, my first encounter with telepathy and needless to say, my first seeing with my own eyes (and not through books) of the energetic auras that surround everyone and everything on this
planet. I no longer had to depend upon faith that divinity existed, I had directly encountered it myself.
As I understand it, currently there is a new psychedelic movement happening, very subtle, but there none the less, with reports appearing in the press of micro-dosing in Silicon Valley. That makes this the perfect time for the release of this important tome. History shows that when the time is right, things happen, or as Timothy Leary and Ram Dass were fond of saying, "when it's time to steam engine, it steam engines!" Nothing in this universe happens by chance. These authors waited decades to release their book and what better time. The classics like DOORS OF PERCEPTION never grow old, but it is time to create the "classics" of the future and this book will become one of those classics.
It was touching to read of both Johathan and Paul's sexual coming of age, their awkwardness at asking girls out for dates, at least in Paul's case. John and their buddy Pok were a touch older so they'd already paid those dues add Jonathan was now learning about maintaining a relationship and relating in an honest way with Ann, his new girlfriend. But of course he soon realized that it would never succeed if Bernie Aaronson had his way during his hypnotic sessions with Jonathan. During some of these sessions the students were administered small amounts of LSD to strengthen the effect of the hypnosis.
What Jonathan and Paul went through was nothing compared to Dr. Carrington's unfortunate patients, but what was done to them was still a violation of their psychological sovereignty and goes against everything our country is supposed to stand for. I agree whole heartly with them that psychedelic sacraments are just that, sacred, just as our minds, emotions and bodies are. No human being should ever "control" another, especially through such covert means. But that being said, these substances are incredible healing tools and amazing gasteways to understanding our place in the universe and the intelligence that created it. Not to mention, they're pleasurable and fun as hell! The key is as Timothy Leary stated, "set and setting". If taken in a secure environment, they are safe and can do in hours what could take years of traditional therapy. Lets hope this book opens that doorway.
