I received this drive today. Before installing this drive, I attempted to register this drive at WDC.COM for warranty coverage. WD site stated that this drive was on OEM product. Returned product to Amazon today.
From WDC FAQ:
1. Retail hard drives (Example: WD1200JBRTL) are sold in a retail package and may include the accessories below:
Quick Installation Guide
Acronis Installation Software (must be downloaded)
2. Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) hard drives (Example: WD1200JB) are sold to OEM Computer manufacturers or Distributors in bulk packaging (bare drive only).
OEM drives are sold without accessories or installation software.
OEM drives may not contain a warranty from Western Digital. When Western Digital sells hard drives to OEM computer manufacturers such as Dell, Compaq, Apple, etc, we sell these drives without warranty. The OEM computer manufacturer would include the hard drive under the warranty of the computer system that the hard drive was installed into. For more information about hard drive warranties, please see our Warranty Policy.
If you want a warranty, do not order this drive.
Received the "New" drive today. Didn't have the usual "Blue" label on the drive and since I was purchasing a new 500GB Blue drive I started to wonder. Had the Black Drive label but didn't say Black. Next, looked at both the date on the label...mine says 24 October 2017. Hmmm not to old for a new hard drive...lol. Next I decided I'd check the warranty on this "new" drive.
Interesting...looks like my "new" drive is "Out of Region" which means I'm checking the warranty in the US but this drive was originally sent to a different country and sold there...whereever there is. It also does not have any warranty status. Not that the warranty is expired but that there is no warranty information on this drive because it is Out of Region per WD's website. Last thing I checked for was is there any wear on the gold pins where the SATA and power connections plug into the drive. Guess what folks...yes indeed there are wear marks. Oh, did I mention the drive was resealed in a static bag and not the original that it usually comes in?
So in the end...This drive is being sold to us as NEW and this drive has been sold to and used somewhere in this world besides the US before being resold to us, AND they are charging $40+ for a used drive. No way guys.
Side note, I own and run a computer repair and business network services company in Rohnert Park, CA. I know what I'm looking at when as it relates to this drive. ...disappointed to say the least.
When I look at the product page it says at the top:
You purchased this item on November 6, 2018.
Capacity: 2TB | Style: 2.5" Mobile Drive HDD - 5400 RPM Class | View this order
When I click view this order, it says:
WD Blue 1TB PC Hard Drive - 5400 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb/s, 128 MB Cache, 2.5" - WD20SPZX
Sold by: Hard Drive Geeks
Return eligible through Jan 31, 2019
The product page shows the 2 TB at 77.99, but the order only shows 1 TB. Be careful if you order the 2 TB 2.5" version, as this may happen to you.
Will update if I hear back from seller.
The range of scores (95th - 5th percentile) for the WD Blue 1TB average is 57.4% (the fastest mechanical drives being 100%). This is a relatively wide range which indicates that the WD Blue 1TB performs inconsistently under varying real world conditions.
I've had good experiences with WD drives in the past, never have I had one fail on me to date, ever. That said, I do handle my tech with care. This led me to purchase 2 of these drives; both are running firmware ver. 01.01A01. They both look exactly the same and the manufacturers dates are only a few months apart. Trouble is one of them is waaaaay out performing the other one. Seq. read/write on the good one easily hits 120 mb/s (give or take 2 or 3 mb) on every benchmark, the other one I'm lucky if benchmark read/writes hit high 80 mb/s. At first I was troubled by the inconsistency and did everything I could think of to remedy it, new drivers, checked for new firmware, playing with AHCI/RAID etc settings in the bios, messing around with the write cache settings in device manager all to no avail. Come to find out this is typical of the WD Blue drives. So what I'm getting at here folks is, if you're not a lucky person then you'll likely be singing the blues if you buy this drive, pun intended. If you do decide to pull the trigger all I have to say is....GOOD LUCK!
