The new hard drive is thinner than the old one, so you have to be sure to orient the computer so the connector lines up when installing it. Otherwise, it is perfect.
This drive runs at 5400 RPM. Some drives run faster, but they also run hotter and use more battery power. Keep that in mind if battery power is more important than drive speed. This one is plenty fast.
That was the first red flag for me the next one was the non manufacturer serial number stuck to the drive on a third party sticker over the sticker from Western Digital. If the drive were new it would have been in its original ESD bag without extra stickers.
Red flag number three was the production year (2014).
I already knew this was going to be used at the very least when I hooked it up to my netbook which I booted into Linux Mint which has a program that let's me see the S.M.A.R.T test results. I couldn't get the results because the computer thought it wasn't formatted, so, playing along, I tried to get it formatted, but the computer couldn't even format it. There was a partition, (which wouldn't have been there if this were actually a new bare drive). The thing also sounded like death.
Conclusion: This seller tried to sell me a used AND BROKEN hard disk and tried to pass it off as new. I AM WRITING THIS REVIEW AS A WARNING TO YOU. TAKE IT FROM A GEEK. IT'S NOT WORTH YOUR TIME TO POTENTIALLY GET A NEW ONE. DO NOT BUY HARD DRIVES FROM THIS SELLER. DO NOT ENCOURAGE FRAUD.
Consider yourself warned.
I've become concerned about reliability, and am dropping my review by one star. That's because the one I just purchased only ran for a few hours before the spindle motor quit. It no longer spins up when power is applied. I lost around 1/2 day and of course all the data on the drive (but nothing important, thankfully). These drives are *very* inexpensive -- perhaps it just isn't possible to manufacture a consistently reliable drive at this price. Amazon's return policies are great, so I'll only be out some time and a trip to UPS, but it sure would have been nice if this drive had lasted a few years before failing.
Had for about 6 months now and absolutely no hiccups whatsoever. It's a good hard drive, so far. Will update if it's 6 feet under.
Decent price, and I need reliability with my work as a field engineer. A lot of my industrial software needs to run on a 32bit system, as I have 16 bit software from the "Old Days" that hasn't been updated, nor has the equipment.
Now, if you wonder about the speed difference between this and the WD Black series with more cache, this one is noticeably slower.
But not like the difference between a normal HD and SSD.
I bought this as a "good enough" drive for my computer, and at a cost savings which is nice. I recommend this one if you need a reliable and decent Hard Drive, and spend the difference on some software if so inclined. You won't get more than maybe 7% better out of a WD Black over this. Maybe less realistically!

I have since installed several games and had no problems what-so-ever. There's not much to say about this other than it was well packaged and 500GB is more than adequate for what I need. I initially looked at a 320GB drive (which was still larger than I needed) but I wanted a trusted brand - I have used Western Digital external hard-discs for some time and felt confident that WD would provide a great device. WD are also pretty reaonsable price-wise, there are cheaper brands but I have read some horror stories and didn't want to risk a poor quality drive. There are also more expensive brands out there, but this represents a good middle ground of decent performance, excellent quality, and acceptable price.
In a nutshell: Highly recommended to anyone requiring an 2.5 SATA drive, especially those wanting one to upgrade the storage space of a PS3 - it was a doddle.
For anybody considering changing their hard drive, Sony has a very comprehensive list of what needs to be done in their website. Simply Google "changing PS3 Hard Drive" and the first hit will be what you need. They detail everything from how to back up your current data, to downloading and installing the console software. Beware, you will need to have an external hard drive formatted to FAT32 to be able to back up your current PS3 files. Feel free to send me an ask if you're not sure what to do. I'll try to help as best I can, however the majority of information is easily located on Google :)
I hope to update within a month on how everything is going!
However, their consumer range aren't neglected in quality whatsoever and with a 3 year warranty as standard a WD drive is the perfect choice for either a replacement for a failing/failed drive
I'm not Biassed towards a manufacturer but WD alonf with Seagate are my first choices, especially seeng as I've been in the industry for the past 16 years.
Yes, some drives fail before their time, and some are just dud, but so are many other things of sensitive electronic nature.
This product, and any other WD product, green and the more advanced black range for consumers have my highest recommendations.
WD 500GB 2.5 inch SATA Internal Hard Drive - Blue
Very easy to install in my laptop, undo 2 screws to access the odl drive then slide the cradle out and remove 4 screws securing the HDD to the cradle, swap drives and refit, took all of 10 mins. Then the bonus of a fresh Windows install and the joy of spending hours reinstalling all my programs :( then again you do work out which ones you never use/dont need any more.
