There are only two compositions on this CD that were written by people other than Dr. Michael White. The works are original, not derivative. My favorite cut is "Katrina," a dirge written to describe the effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans. You can't go wrong by buying a copy of this album. Just hot, sizzling.

Since our first visit to New Orleans where we happened to spend an evening at Snug Harbor (I believe that's the correct name of the club) and heard Dr. White perform live, we have been crazy in love with the music of this remarkable clarinetist. He surely belongs with the ranks of the Marsalis family and deserves a wide audience across the world. He sustained major losses during Hurricane Katrina, including his collection of valuable instruments, but he is back. And he IS back!! This album is glorious

Good music, a bit academic, but that doesn't make the music any less enjoyable.

I first came across Dr Michael White on the Jazz Crusade Label "Praying & Swaying AT THE" CROSS" volume 1. The inner play between White and Gregg Stafford was music to any jazz fan's
ears. It was soulful, reverent and "heavenly." The cuts on Basin Street Record's "Dancing in the Sky" was more swinging and the inter play between White and Stafford didn't seem to me
to be as smooth. This may have been due to the larger number of sidemen in the "Dancing in the Sky" cuts. But my ears tell me that the Jazz Crusade's arrangements were the real difference.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. White and his quartet back in 2008 while I was vacationing in New Orleans. They were performing at the Intercontinental Hotel during a brunch on a Sunday morning and let me tell you, it is an experience I will never forget. As a clarinetist myself, I was in seventh heaven watching him play. He has such heart, raw and real down to the depths of his soul passion in music. I even got the opportunity to me with him and the guys from the quartet. It was an experience I will cherish for a very very long time.
He was kind enough to give me a copy of Blue Cresent to take with me (which I've listened to thousands of times) and when I heard "Katrina for the first time, my jaw hit the floor. Anyone who wasn't directly impacted when Katrina hit; we saw the sorrow and devastation on TV but the pictures do not do it justice. Listening to "Katrina" really paints a picture of just how bad it was. I know Dr. White has said that writing and playing was a key to help him through one of the worst times in his life.

Dr Michael White is a wonderful musician who has recaptured the classical style of New Orleans clarinetists. He has recreated something from the time of the birth of Jazz.
