5.0 out of 5 stars This stuff really works
By Matthew Maroon on May 7, 2017
I used this to braze a frame out of aluminum angle iron. I manually stress tested the joints afterward, a little skeptical it would hold. I am skeptical no longer. It's a very similar process to sweating copper pipe, and is therefore very easy, and the resulting joint seems very strong.

A Bernzomatic TS-8000 with MAPP gas heats the joint up in less than a minute, and I was using 1.5" x 1.5" x 0.125" aluminum angle. I bet you could do that with propane, though you'd be waiting a few more minutes for each joint. If you're doing a small project it's probably fine, but if you're going much beyond that or using thicker metals I'd probably upgrade.

There's a pretty good window between hot enough to melt the solder and hot enough to melt the aluminum, so if you're not careless it shouldn't be a problem.

You get a pretty decent amount for the money here. At home depot, aluminum brazing rods are like $2 each. These are about half the price and I prefer them to the Bernzomatic ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have never brazed anything before, but...SUCCESS!!
By Ken on November 19, 2018
I have a Dodge Ram pickup with 8.0L V-10 engine. When changing the thermostat, a little metal ring was upside down, causing the very special thermostat housing to crack very badly, almost in half. After failing to find the replacement part, I decided to give this product a try. I ground away a V section across the crack to create some surface area for the brazing to stick. As the housing is very heavy cast aluminum, a propane or MAPP torch would not be sufficient at 34 degrees ambient. Using the turkey fryer propane burner, I warmed the part until it was about 300 - 350 F. Then, using the MAPP torch, very gently heated the crack, checking the temperature by simply scraping the rod across the prepped crack. After a few minutes, the rod began to melt onto the cast aluminum. A little more careful heating and testing and then it all worked out great...the crack filled in with very good control over the molten aluminum rod. While I did have some trouble keeping the rod from puddling on the 2 sides (a couple inches of rise on the sides), it was not too bad. The quality of the picture is not very good, but the crack was just to the right of the vertical spout on the left, between the big spout and the sensor mount, which is the vertical protrusion in the middle of the casting. The crack was across about 90% of the distance across. Only 2 warm-up and cool-down cycles on the truck, but all looks great.
I highly recommend this product for anyone with a little patience and curiosity!! I am very surprised and pleased!!
