Purchase options and add-ons
Love is already hard enough, but it becomes an unnavigable maze for unassuming high school student Taichi Ichinose and his shy classmate Futaba Kuze when they begin to fall for each other after their same-sex best friends have already fallen for them.
For some reason, Taichi Ichinose just can’t stand Futaba Kuze. But at the start of his third year in high school, he finds himself in the same homeroom as her, along with his childhood friend Toma Mita, a star athlete. But one day, Futaba opens up to Taichi and admits she has a crush on Toma. She then asks for his help in confessing to him! There’s just one problem—Toma seems to already have a secret crush on someone else.

Blue Flag volume 1 introduces us to the three or four main characters and how they interact with each other. The displays of friendship both the rekindled ones and the new ones are beautiful. I loved them and I loved how they deepened and broadened to the point that they became something intimate, personal, and perhaps romantic. It will be curious to see if we get love triangles or more as Toma’s crush seems to be hinted to be Taichi, and Taichi expressed attracting towards Futaba while Futaba is seeking Taichi’s help to get with Toma’s, and then we have the fourth character, who, perhaps may have a thing for Futaba? If that is the case, then getting this LGBT manga set in the boys demographic of Shueisha’s leanings with the typical features found in romance manga aimed towards girls is unique, progressive, and intriguing. Ultimately it feels different from the romance manga that we have with one male lead characters and three to seven girls that all love him and only him.
Overall, I highly suggest this manga. The larger size is pretty good and the image quality seems better than its contemporaries. I do believe that is because the pages on the only platform from which this manga was serialized on allowed pages to be higher resolution than what regular Shonen Jump series that appear in the magazine in print appear.
The manga could have had extras. The only extra we received was some cute omake and a few comments between chapters, but it was slim especially compared to other volume 1’s of series.
✂️
When Taichi Ichinose starts his third year in high school he finds himself in the same homeroom class as Futaba Kuze. For some reason Taichi really doesn't like Futaba. But, after a super awkward scene in a book store Taichi reluctantly agrees to help Futaba finally tell her crush her true feelings. But there's a problem, her crush is Toma, the school's super star athlete and he already has a crush on...someone else! Who is that someone else?
✂️
The character's emotions were palpable from the page. Toma, Taichi and Futaba's characters portrayed a nuanced mix of teenage angst paired with sadness and uncertainty. I immediately wanted to read the next in the series
