I love this book. It is great for the coffee table and to share with others about the Ocean and its importance. As a scuba diver, I just love flipping through the pages and looking at the outstanding photography. But, the articles are also very informative and useful. Highly recommend if this is something you are interested in learning about, or just having a piece in your place to display your love of the ocean!

Bought 3 of these books for top 3 winning prizes in a contest to design a crab character for a free Game App (Crab Castles).
Sylvia A. Earle is an internationally recognized expert in the marine environment and when people at the contest saw the book, the competition to win a copy of this book became very serious! The pictures are gorgeous (true National Geographic quality) and the message a very important one for the life and health of all on our planet. Highly recommend this book.

Studying the oceans gained popularity with Cousteau. About the same time, Sylvia Earle researched the ocean's vast resources and then, after seeing declines, began campaigns. Now, with documentary films, a non-profit organization, speeches on the road, and this book she makes a detailed case for conservation. Every coastal nation has some territory in need of reserves (marine parks, like ones for coral reefs and salmon river deltas). However, the big potential is conserving international oceans. The big harvesters of fish and shrimp need to accept that international ocean (the high seas) have an important role in the climate, for emergency food resources, and as an area where coastal fisheries can breed, migrate, consume plankton, and replenish their numbers. Many non-profits focus on the environment but often can't get votes in Congress or at the UN for the big initiatives.

Minor damage to the hardcover and black coloration stains on the ends of some of the pages, again minor, it's just upsetting as I like my books to at least arrive to me in pristine condition...

The photos in this book are stunning and amazing. Sylvia Earle is an experienced marine researcher with numerous accolades and decades of marine research to her credit. The message behind this book is ever more critical in today's climate with warming oceans, coral bleaching and pollution. Would highly recommend this book to any marine lover.
