A landmark book by marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols on the remarkable effects of water on our health and well-being.
Why are we drawn to the ocean each summer? Why does being near water set our minds and bodies at ease? In
Blue Mind, Wallace J. Nichols revolutionizes how we think about these questions, revealing the remarkable truth about the benefits of being in, on, under, or simply near water.
Combining cutting-edge neuroscience with compelling personal stories from top athletes, leading scientists, military veterans, and gifted artists, he shows how proximity to water can improve performance, increase calm, diminish anxiety, and increase professional success.

Blue Mind not only illustrates the crucial importance of our connection to water-it provides a paradigm shifting "blueprint" for a better life on this Blue Marble we call home.

Why Blue Mind is Essential Reading for the Conservation Movement

Why Blue Mind is Essential Reading for the Conservation Movement
Wallace J. Nilchols has written an important and inspiring book about why our connection to water and especially the ocean is important for our physical, emotional and cognitive health. As a conservationist, this book is important to me to help to explain to the general public why investing in the protection and restoration of our open aquatic spaces as well as making sure we have access to them, is an urgent priority. Anyone who cares about nature and our nature-deficit disorder should read this book. And then you must teach others what you have learned. I am grateful to Dr. Nichols for the years of research that went into this groundbreaking work and his passion for spreading the message of why we need water. And as the wife of a surfer with two surfer sons who are also ocean lifeguards I know that for our family's happiness, contact with our ocean is an absolute must.Emily H. I honestly do not know where to begin... I usually am not a book reader, but when I come across a true story or a interesting title, I tend to go for it. I am currently studying Marine Biology in college and I really enjoyed this book. I even got to meet the author in person and get my book signed by Wallace J. Nichols via a Lecture Series Event featured with the WAVE Foundation at Newport Aquarium for my school (Thomas More University). This book not only opened my overall opinion about water, but it also gave me confidence within the field of marine biology. I think being near, in, on, or under water (as the book states), is an important role of why humans exist. If we did not have our oceans, we would really not be here. The ocean to me is my safe place, my passion, my well-being, my body, and everything in-between. It gives me a sense of power and hope in this world. This book also does a good job pointing out the negatives and positives throughout. One negative is that our generation or younger generations are so glued to being inside, playing video games, being on our phones, that we miss out on the wonders that lie ahead of us outside, in nature, in our backyards, etc. It is sad sometimes, because we have such a beautiful earth that we live on and some tend to take and destroy our earth. The ocean is part of us and we are part of the ocean. Blue Mind also attracts so many people other than marine biology majors. It was super cool to see some of my friends who are non majors and to see their perspective of the world after reading this book. They were more open with their feelings, their interests, etc. Overall, I would 100% recommend this book to anyone!

    J. Nichols has created a gem of a "textbook". I would like to see this information shared in all school curriculum, corporations, and doctor's offices. This book is based on essential ancient wisdom packaged with new research, and written in a very relatable way. The surprisingly obvious thing, that our wellbeing can INSTANTLY be enhanced with something as simple, and as in close proximity to you, as your own shower/bathtub, a visit to a body of water, watching a water related film or looking at photos of an ocean wave, etc., isn't well practiced by so many of us. I truly believe if we connected with nature more, especially with water, we wouldn't have the magnitude of diseases and conditions (i.e. heart disease, cancer, diabetes, mental illnesses) that have been so common and prevalent for far too long. Connection with nature, and particularly water, is such an easy (an enjoyable!) fix to these problems. I hope that tapping into a blue mind (a calm meditative joyful creative state - induced by one's connection with water) will become widely known and practiced from kids to adults. I highly recommend this book to everyone, at any age, at any stage of health, and of any professional background. I have been in the field of health and wellness for over 30 years, as a Registered Dietitian & Certified Health Coach, and believe that blue mind can play a key role in each one of our lives. After you read Blue Mind, hop over to J. Nichols social media (facebook/IG) and site to learn more and connect with a global blue mind community. I have been sharing this information with clients, colleagues, friends and family and encourage you to do the same. As J. says "I wish you water" and "live blue".

First, let me say this: read the book, it's an important work. When I retired from the fire department I was a little beat up and I leaned on the information in this book for healing, mostly making intentional effort to be in or around water.

The basic premise of Nichols' book is that being in, on, near, or around water is healing for the human system. He presents stories and research in the book to back these claims. It's why we feel the stress drop away from our body when we stand on the beach.

Allow me to offer some constructive criticism. Nichols is a scientist and not a writer and this comes out in the book. While I rather enjoyed the content of the book, the reading was sometimes difficult for me due to the choppy, occasional unconnected writing.

Regardless, Nichols' heart is in the right place and it is obvious that he is a genuinely good man who cares about water, ecosystems, nature, and the planet. His own voice begins to come through in the closing chapters and I enjoyed his voice.

This book pairs nicely with The Blue Zones.

Very inspiring book (can also highly recommend the audiobook - read by the author himself) connecting our emotions, senses and wisdom of our body with fascinating science studies - from neuroscience, psychology, ecology, human behaviour to marine biology to answer the question why humans are so enchanted and in love with water. More importantly. the book not only provides answers from a vast variety of different perspectives, but motivates the reader to ask the next big question for themselves. Why is this so important? A daring alchemy of science and personal/ emotional anecdotes make this a great read - especially while in nature and or near water. It equally challenges the mind as well as the heart, provides examples of water's value in everyday life - whether at home or at work. A call to care. For each other and for the oceans and waterways. How can we become better, as a human, as people, as being one with nature- our health and happiness deeply connected with and rooted in our evolution from water. Water is Life.

Our planet is blue. Our mind should be too. Lets make it so !
