The WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD utilizes 3D NAND technology for capacities up to 2TB with enhanced reliability. Featuring an active power draw up to 25% lower than previous generations of WD Blue SSDs, you’re able to work longer before recharging your laptop, while sequential read speeds up to 560MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 530MB/s give the speed you want for your most demanding computing applications. Combined with the free, downloadable WD SSD Dashboard software and a 5-year limited warranty, you can confidently upgrade your system to the WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD. As used for storage capacity, one terabyte (TB) = one trillion bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending on operating environment. Active power draws are up to 25% lower during sequential reads than previous generations of WD Blue SSD at the 500GB capacity point. As used for transfer rate or interface, megabyte per second (MB/s) = one million bytes per second and gigabit per second (Gb/s) = one billion bits per second. MTTF = Mean Time To Failure based on internal testing using Telcordia stress part testing. TBW (terabytes written) values calculated using JEDEC client workload (JESD219) and vary by product capacity.

After getting this product, I proceeded to benchmark it with Crystal Disk. I was getting read speeds between 350 MB/s and 460 MB/s and write speeds between 490 MB/s and 530 MB/s. The write speeds are exactly where I would expect, but the read speeds are at best 20% lower than expected. I RMA'd the unit after extensive system checking and received a replacement. After benchmarking the second drive, I am getting slightly slower speeds.
I have run through a battery of test to pin down where this performance drop is coming from. As of now, I have tested the drive with different CPU clocks, different RAM clocks, I've removed PCIe cards, I've removed other hard drives, I've tested several BIOS and Chipsets, I've updated all of my system drivers, I've tested on a fresh install of windows, and I've played around with a few advanced BIOS tweaks. As of now, nothing changes the performance (outside of standard variations between runs). Here are my system specs as of now:
CPU: Ryzen 1700 @ 3.6GHz
CPU Cooler: CM Hyper 212
Motherboard: Asus CH VI
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance @ 3200MHz
Graphics Card: MSI R9 390
Case: Corsair 570x
Additional: Asus AC68 Wireless card
As of now, I am very disappointed in this drive, but I feel that the problem isn't necessarily with the manufacturer. I think the issue is either due to hardware compatibility (i.e. Ryzen or my motherboard not liking the drive) or a Windows setting. Because of this I strongly urge caution in buying this drive if you have a system that is similar to mine.
Update: I opened a troubleshooting ticket with the manufacturer, but I was told the following: "Please allow us to inform you that as per the details provided by you, the drive seems to be working fine as the advertised speed is the maximum speed that you can get from the drive and is not mandatory that you will receive the advertised speed every time." This is disappointing to hear from the manufacturer because on a good test (which is what I sent them) I get a 20% performance drop over the advertised speed. On a bad test, I get a 40% drop. My first ssd was an 840 evo from Samsung and it performs well above the advertised speeds for this drive. With these types of issues, I think that I will be sticking with Samsung as they make a great product and I trust them more than WD.
Anyhow, I tried cloning but as always is the case it never goes without snags which I expected. So I get everything sorted out and have been running this drive as my windows and programs drive. While I had it open I also swapped the dvd out for a second hard drive which the original drives serves as now.
This drive is maybe 3 or 4 seconds faster at total boot? My previous computer I bought a Crucial SSD of lesser spec than this one and it made a huge difference. I was going to buy another Crucial drive but liked this one and WD always has been good in my experience. In all instances so far I see no real speed improvements in loading anything. Once loaded there is a slightly noticeable speed in program functions but nothing like I would have expected having used an SSD drive before. I am not inexperienced with computers and I have tried everything I can think of to get a boost but seems this drive simply has no real advantages over what I was using aside of some slightly faster function processing in running programs. Not worth what I paid considering I could have left the drive that was in place alone. Was not worth all the work and hassle for so minimal improvement. I will still stick by WD for external drives but will not buy another WD SSD.
I bought this hoping to speed up my computer, which is only 6 months old, but came with an old-fashioned HDD. The increase in speed is barely noticeable, if at all. I guess it might take 20 seconds off the boot time, but that doesn't matter much to me because I leave it on all the time. I can't discern much difference otherwise. I was hoping browsing through photos and files on the drive would be quicker, but it really isn't. Editing photos isn't really any faster. I was hoping internet browsing and video performance would be faster, but nope. I guess the old hard drive was good enough, and maybe the processor and graphics are the bottlenecks. So, if you have a newer computer with an i3 processor and integrated graphics, don't expect much difference.
Oh, and they don't tell you that Microsoft will get suspicious when you clone a drive and require you to re-enter your Windows key, so have that handy.
