Blue Microphones Snowball USB Microphone
Create studio-quality recordings with Blue Microphone's Snowball, a USB microphone with exceptional sound-capture capabilities. Using Blue Microphone's award-winning dual-capsule and circuit design, the Snowball produces crisp, clean recordings that are free of feedback and distortion.
A unique pattern switch allows you to toggle between three different settings, giving you the flexibility to record vocals, instrumental music, podcasts, interviews, and more. With a plug-and-play design that is both Mac and PC compatible, the Snowball requires no additional drivers and is ready to record straight out of the box.
Three Different Pattern Modes for Versatile Recording
Well-suited to podcasts, sung vocals, and other voice work, cardioid mode records sound sources that are directly in front of the microphone. It delivers a rich, full-bodied sound.
Cardioid Mode with -10 dB PAD
The same as cardioid mode, except with a -10 dB attenuation that helps you capture louder sounds with higher fidelity.
Omnidirectional mode picks up sound equally from all directions. It is best used in situations when you want to capture the ambience of 'being there'--like a live recording of a band's performance.

What did Blue put inside that wild-looking Snowball USB mic, anyway? How about two completely distinct capsules? Yep. You can sing into it, put it on you guitar amp, or just put the Snowball on its included stand and pretend you're sending signals back to your home planet. Podcast with it, record entire albums with it, and appreciate the fact that it plugs straight into your computer, via USB. That's convenience! You even get a handy 10dB pad, so your crazy-loud guitar player won't cause the mic to distort. It's round, it's white, it sounds like a million bucks, and it's right here, ready to ship. Get yours today or get left out in the cold!

It comes with a stand and is ready to use straight out of the box. Simply plug in to your computer's USB port and start recording.
As for my set-up, I currently have it on a boom arm (NEEWER Microphone Suspension Boom Scissor Arm Stand) with a vibration reducing shockmount (Blue Microphones Ringer Universal Shockmount for Ball Microphones) and pop filter (Dragonpad pop filter Studio Microphone Mic Wind Screen Pop Filter Swivel Mount 360 Flexible Gooseneck Holder). This might be more than needed for a beginner but for the total cost of it all, I am very satisfied with the quality it produces.
**If you are looking for a cheaper alternative for a decent quality producing set-up, I use to place this microphone in a storage box (LOHAS Home Closet Fabric Drawer,Foldable Fabric Baskets,Storage Bins (Natural)) lined with acoustic foam (Mybecca 12 Pack Acoustic Wedge Studio Soundproofing Foam Wall Tiles 12" X 12" X 1" (12 Square Feet) Made in USA). See my attached image for a better idea. This created a simple "recording booth" that produced fairly good audio. I just recently changed my set-up because I needed more room on my desk.
Overall, I would recommend this microphone to anyone interested in getting started with quality audio recording. If you are looking for more of an expert recording quality level, you might want to look into Blue's other microphones. I hope this review and set-up suggestions helped you out! Happy Recordings!
The ICE version is $20 dollars cheaper. The only thing it is missing is the conference call mode and -10db mode for instrument recording.
Neither of these things is necessary for my usage, which is mainly VoIP communications for gaming.
The $20 you save, you can put towards picking up a Microphone boom arm ($13-15~) a USB A to B adapter ($3-5) and a USB ON/OFF switch with extension cable ($13.90)
With these 3 purchases, the microphone can be adjusted anywhere you please, and will have an ON/OFF switch, which even the $70 non ICE version is lacking.
In conclusion, I spent $20 that I probably didn't need to. Not a big deal. With the Arm + Adapter + Switch this is a great microphone setup, and my friends all say it sounds really great on their end.
Here are the links to the accessories I purchased with my Blue Snowball.
Optional 3-Inch Cable for in between Adapter and Switch.
We have soooo much background noise around us - cars, people, sirens, dogs, schoolyard kids, more dogs and people - airplanes and more people - so a Cardioid is a must to record any vocal work. The Snowball is indeed a True Cardioid - for this particular mic - the sweet-spot is directly head on - within 3-4 inches of the mic - for effective pick up of voice patterns - for what I'm up too - it's not a deal breaker - you end up feeling like Mike Ness from Social Distortion...
The 3 different settings are nice to have - (the other version - Snowball iCE - lacks this feature) #1 is boss though - again for killing off massive pesky amounts of white noise and background interference. I'm now getting nice healthy - quiet signal into Audacity and Sony Acid - compared to my old mic set up - Make sure to add a Pop Filter - it becomes mandatory at this point.
Build Quality is pretty good - the mounting options depend on having the adapter from inside a regular mic holder - The Snowball tends to be Steady once placed - however I'm thinking the Blue Ringer Shockmount might be a future upgrade - it just needs to be in your face in order to be effective - Probably because it also has native options for use with guitars and other musical instruments/amps - (setting #2) Last Is a 3rd setting - for a more omnidirectional feel...
Overall - I'd have to say it's a nice mic for the price - with noticeable quality in signal - especially if you are stepping up from a cheap mic.
