At first I wasn't sure how I felt about this book. I was reading it, I found it interesting enough, but I didn't feel like it was having any kind of emotional impact on me. I like to read books that have a straightforward, immediately noticeable impact on me, I guess. If it's a romance, then I want to feel that hope that they will get together, If it is a mystery, I enjoy the suspense of not knowing who did it or why. With a thriller, I love the pulse pounding, edge of your seat feeling of not knowing what is going to happen next.

With this book, it all sort of crept up on me. I didn't realize until halfway through the story that I was emotionally attached to the main character. I was really hoping that she would get her answers during her trip. I was really wanting everything to turn out all right for her.

The depth of my emotional response towards the end of the book surprised me. I was leaking tears without even realizing it. My whole world was narrowed down to the book and the story held within it. I never suspected that I cared so much about how the story would end, and whether or not it would be a happy ending or a sad one for Aubrey, until I was already at the end.

I know, it's not much of a review. I am not sure what to say about it. The writing is really good. I loved how descriptive the author is. It felt like I could really visualize the places Aubrey and Jeff visited. I could almost see the colors that Aubrey painted with.

Aubrey is so independent and strong, yet is feeling very vulnerable and fragile through most of the book. It is difficult at times to imagine what she is going through, without having experienced it myself. I feel that I would not handle it as well as she did. I really don't think I could go on as strongly as she does.

Firstly, I want to say that although I'm blind, my senses definitely aren't sharper. I do, however, tune into them with deliberation, since they are, in a sense, my sight. That criticism aside, I think this book was amazing. I laughed in parts, cried in others, and reveled in Aubrey's adventures. It was as though I was there with her, taking it all in. I also love how, in Aubrey's artistic transition, Hoang illustrated how adaptation is a way of life for people with disabilities (and of course humanity at large). When he was a child, John Bramblitt was talented in drawing; when he lost his sight, he learned to paint by touch. I drew as a child also, then picked up a camera in much the way that Aubrey did, and as my vision has dwindled over the years, I've gradually shifted to painting pictures with words and song. Just as the human will find a way to survive, the artist will find a way to create. To express. To inspire.

I received this book as a present. I had no previous knowledge about the author or what the book was about.
I have a hard time with reviews; many have too many spoilers. Without giving too much away, I will express my opinion about my experience with this novel.
The name “BLUE SUN, YELLOW SKY” is a fantastic expression. You get immediately intrigued and later on realize how fitting the title is to the story.

In the beginning, the plot is a little slow. I was enjoying the story, but I had no emotional connection to the character. It came out of a left field. Halfway through the story I was fully invested. My emotional response snuck up on me. I was crying my eyes out before the story even ended. Not knowing if it would be a happy or sad ending.
FIRST: Jamie Hoang is an artist. Her background in screenwriting explains her ability to not only describe the art pieces, but her travel stories are so vivid you feel like you are there.
SECOND: The travel makes this novel feel longer because you cover the whole world. You visit the well known major tourist attractions, but Jamie makes you see them from a different angle and in much richer colors.
THIRD: Jamie’s creative dialogue puts you right into characters shoes. You feel their fragility and struggles. It’s so real; you pause to ask yourself what would be your reaction? How would you handle your life “if” that happened to you?
FOURTH: The love story in this book is a perfect balance between friendship and romance. I also loved that it was secondary to the main story, still with a great importance.

This book is going to move you in many different ways. It will force you to think about the harsh reality of life and how fast life can take a turn.

The idea of a successful painter going blind really caught my attention. At its core, "Blue Sun, Yellow Sky" successfully combines several themes - it's a travel-buddy adventure, an introspective medical drama, and ultimately a coming-of-age love story. The book is told from the point of view of an award-winning painter named Aubrey; she's slowly going blind. You get to experience the highs, the lows, and the humor in between from her vantage point.

The travel aspect of it takes you to a lot of pretty cool destinations. With that in mind, a lot of authors might bog down a story with way too much unnecessary scenery detail, but Ms. Hoang manages to avoid that problem by mixing just the right amount of detail with the story and dialogue. By reading this book, for example, I can probably describe each of Aubrey and Jeff's destinations with enough detail to make somebody assume I've actually been there. In fact, after reading the book I have to assume that the author has been to each and every location (and taken lots of notes).

The very nature of this story means that it involves a lot of dialogue which, fortunately, the author knows how to do correctly. Good dialogue makes you feel like you're eavesdropping on an interesting conversation. The dialogue in "Blue Sun, Yellow Sky" achieves that, whether it be the funny banter between artists or the more intimate discussions between old friends. That dialogue helps develop the characters into living breathing people. Halfway through the story, I found myself hoping for a Hollywood-type ending to save Aubrey from a tough existence. However, the actual ending is much better than anything Hollywood could come up with. I first learned about this book and the author on Twitter and I'm glad I did because "Blue Sun, Yellow Sky" is a polished and enjoyable story well worth your time.
