5-Star Review from Reader's Favorite
Sybrina Durant's illustrated young adult fantasy novel, The BlueUnicorn's Journey to Osm, is an unusual and enchanting story about ayoung unicorn's quest to save his tribe and his coming of age. Durant'sstory is slyly whimsical as she builds up the world of Marbryn, a worldwhere there are many wonders, but also threats to the existence ofBlue's tribe. Dasguptarts' illustrations are masterful and glowing, filled with detail, brilliant colors and excitement. From the firstillustration depicting the birth of Little Blue through the succeedingvarious locales, challenges and adventures he braves in his quest tofulfill his destiny, the illustrations chart each event faithfully andbring each unicorn and ally to life. Durant's story is filled withaction and adventure as well as an earth-shattering battle between theforces of good and evil. She also includes a guide to pronunciation, anIntroduction to each member of the Tribe of Metal Horned Unicorns, andan anatomical guide to unicorns. The Blue Unicorn's Journey to Osm is agrand coming of age tale that's highly recommended. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Children may delight in the scene where unicorns feast on fragrant banana raisin bread and cinnamon oatmeal cookies.
But not the violent fight scenes, use of sharp daggers “he poked the point of the dagger just slightly into her neck, causing a small trail of blood to ooze.” “...its blade was honed to such razor sharpness that a single swipe would take off most heads.” “A blast from her magical horn turned it to hot liquid…The Cusser screamed as he was splashed with liquid metal.” “The Bugan hacked as the manticores slashed until Nix was a bloody mess.” “A Heptad lopped off a manticore’s head with his axe.” “…to see the nickel-horned unicorn being battered to death.” “..suffered the most agonizing death.”
What is the role of the Moon-Star Numen? How does Blue get his strength and magic? How does Osm save the tribe? Will they ever get back home to Unimaise? Sybrina Durant spins a tale in the magical world of unicorns.
Unicorns are hunted by a magician for their corns and expect the new born Blue unicorn to save them as a prophesy foretold. Though, Blue lacks of a magical power and to face the magician hunter he tries to reunite Unicorns and cultivate among them friendship and solidarity.
This book is about friendship and self-esteem in a world composed of reality and phantasy. It has an interesting story line accompanied by nice illustrations.
An awesome read for young and adult alike.
This is not what I would consider a “chapter book,” so I was thrown off by the title. It is definitely more appropriate for upper middle grade than an emerging reader (the typical “chapter book” reader). It is too long to be a chapter book (42 chapters). Plus, there is violence and death in the book. The evil sorcerer kills unicorns so that he can cut off their horns and hooves for their magic. An epic battle scene near the end is pretty graphic as well.
The illustrations are beautiful. I’m sure I will go back and just look at the pictures again – there is much to discover in them.
