I wanted to replace my dog's leather collar with something easier to clip, but equally aesthetic. I also wanted something that would make her look a teensy bit more like a girl. My sweet lady pittie is pretty butch (in the best sense), but due to BSL in my city and general fear surrounding her breed, I find it’s in her best interest for people to view her As Non-Threatening As Possible (ANTAP). I realize this plays into heteronormative gender stereotypes and I shouldn’t allow myself to be swayed by popular bias, but I also believe that stigma is real and that most dogs are highly sensitive to human emotion and can tell when someone is afraid, even from a short distance. This makes the dog more jumpy, now assuming there is something to be concerned about, thus confirming the human’s negative perceptions and continuing the cycle of misunderstanding. Put simply, if my dog has a pretty pink collar, people will be let threatened by her.
I probably spent hours looking at different collar options online—did I like the pattern, would it look good with my dog's harness and backpack, was it the right width for her neck, would it be comfortable, would the color and materials stand up to mud, dirt and abuse?
I tried and returned a few from Etsy, but ultimately settled on the pink and blue Aztec style on the base of the pile in the Amazon product pic, anticipating that both the yellow neoprene and white sections of the fabric would probably stain pretty easily. Worth the risk, though, because the bright colors and pattern are so cute.
I liked the collar right away. It's not as stiff as the handmade ones I'd purchased previously, soft to the touch, nice flex, and the stitching seems really solid. After only having the collar a few days, my boyfriend and I took Nova to Utah for some desert camping and canyoneering, where we all got doused in red dust and clay. While the collar was never completely submerged in mud, it was still exposed to quite a bit of dirt, and still looks fresh and new. Some slight smudging on the neoprene and the white is ever-so-slightly less bright. Not bad at all.
I am a software usability designer and truly appreciate a well-designed product, whether physical or digital. While I was initially skeptical of the extra plastic hoop, I quickly came to appreciate it's practicality. I have a side-pull harness (which I also love) that clips to Nova's collar, so I'm always clipping and unclipping. Having the plastic hoop for her ID tags keeps them out of the way of my hands, easier to access, and, theoretically, easier for a stranger to retrieve because they're not hanging on the underside of her neck. I’ve found lost dogs in the past and have had a difficult time getting the dog to let me see their tags. And the plastic means less metal on metal clinking. It’s an elegant solution.
In the past, I would find myself removing Nova’s collar because her tags were so loud. This time around I ordered a flat, slide-on tag, one that has gaps in the prongs so you can still use it on a buckle-type collar when you can’t remove the hardware from either end of the collar. This type of tag is designed for those flimsy nylon collars you see at the grocery store, not the sturdy double-layered one I purchased, which would be too thick. I took a gamble, hoping I would be able to force the prongs of the tag in between the two layers of fabric, perhaps ripping a stitch or two, but not compromising the collar’s structural integrity. This also meant that the metal prongs would be padded on either side and not chafing Nova’s neck.
After receiving my tag in the mail, I determined that it could work the way I planned, but the ideal location for the tag happened to be where Blueberry Pet emblem and little plastic tag clip hoop were. Since I dislike being branded, the possibility of removing the label with my sewing seam ripper and attaching the tag over the same spot appealed to me. But I had already grown attached to this second hoop. I ripped the label off regardless, only to find that the label and hoop are independently attached! Ripping off the label revealed that the hoop is secured with stiff interfacing and would be perfectly covered up by the new tag.
I will definitely be buying more of these. I love so many of the patterns in the Blueberry Pet product line, and they're so inexpensive, it will be fun to switch it up sometimes.
Only downsides are that the light colors will eventually get dirtier, and that dog hair clings to fabric more than leather, but that can’t really be helped. Overall, this collar greatly exceeded my expectations.
Extra perk: this 3/4” medium-sized collar is a little longer than most, so my thick-necked dog can still wear a collar that is proportional to her head. Most 16” collars are 1” wide, which makes her look like a member of the Elizabethan court.

This collar is beautiful and soft, and looks great on my dog. I purchased a large for her, as she has an 18 inch neck, though I could have gotten a medium. I chose a large based on the 1 inch width, as I felt a 3/4 inch wouldn't have looked quite right on such a big dog. She's a boxer weighing in at 70lbs.
I'm pleased that the buckle is very easy to unclip. I previously purchased a set of BP collars for two of my smaller girls, and gave a four star review based on the fact that the buckles are difficult to get undone. I also really like that this collar features a clip specifically for tags, as getting them on the leash hook would be quite difficult, due to how the thick the hook is.
I'm very happy with this collar and would recommend it to others looking for a stylish collar for their furry friend.
I wish the size medium was a little bit wider or that the large adjusted to a smaller circumference.
Review from Jeannie’s Product Reviews
My daughter’s dogs were the testers for these collars once again. Flash is a lab x spaniel, six years old.
This collar looks great on him. It’s made of a soft polyester webbing and nicely padded. The inner is the same print fabric, and its fully washable. It feels as though it will dry very quickly, useful if caught out in the rain when the smell of wet dog can last in a slow to dry collar such as the cotton or leather types. The fit is very adjustable, Flash has the medium collar, and that’s on the larger side of adjustment but still has more room. These collars and harness to cover a wide range of sizes. We’ve got three collars for review, this one, the diamond pattern and the reflective yellow one. this and the diamond pattern don’t feel as strong or thick as the yellow and the snap locks and metal lead connectors are smaller, although they are all size M. If you’ve a dog that’s hard on collars you might want to get the tougher one, but this seems pretty tough even though its lighter in feel. I’ve added photos showing the size differences. All the blueberry collars are very robust, the ones we had earlier for review are still looking good after several weeks of constant use and a couple of washings. Flash and Roxie do seem to love dirt – still, that’s true of most dogs given a choice.
What we liked:
- the design, fun and unusual, a change from the basic solid collar collars.
-The fit covers a wide range of sizes, and doesn’t rub or pull coat hair. Both dogs have short hair but I feel this would be just as good for a long hair dog. They’ve both taken to wearing them comfortably, no rubbing trying to remove it which is excellent.
-The clips to connect are eco-friendly plastic, but strong and very simple to clip together. For people like myself with hand/finger issues for whom buckles present problems this type of clip is perfect.
-I like that the name tag attachment is separate from the lead clip, too often they’re a combined function and the name tag gets caught/damaged when clipping the lead on.
-Washable, so when they roll in the fox poo – every time they visit me it seems Flash finds some....its quick to wash it off and dry the collars.- Even if your dogs don’t do things like that – and most dogs can find something smelly to roll in- collars still pick up grease from coats and dirt from everyday wear but a quick wash and these look great again.
