Speaker Look: Upon closer inspection the metal (its not really metal) frame of the speaker was dented in two places.
Performance: Surprisingly low output (for all 3 modes: memory card, bluetooth and aux). I also tried different devices (my iPhone and a friend's Galaxy S5) just to make sure it wasn't because of the device. The bass, top volume and sound of the speaker is of the same quality you'd get from a $10 unbranded speaker. Even after changing my phone's EQ to Bass Booster and fiddling around with the speaker's EQ mode (there is a supposed EQ mode - in reality you are just pressing a button on the speaker and there is no way of knowing whether the EQ is changing or not; no noticeable difference in the horrible bass quality and no indication on the speaker). It's best that I say nothing about the volume of the speaker because it was an even bigger disappointment than the bass.
The reason I was surprised is because this speaker is in the mid range price wise. When something has a price tag of $80; I got in an Amazon lightning deal and payed $40 but nevertheless you expect quality worthy of that price tag. This speaker does not even come close to it. Not the packaging, the look(it looks cool from afar but boy oh boy you are in for a surprise when you inspect it closely) or the performance. It has taken my trust away from ever trusting an Amazon Lightning Deal again.
Bluetooth 4.2, pairing was simple and pretty quick, pairs two source devices simultaneously.
Frequency response (20Hz-22000Hz), very good low, excellent mid and high sounds.
The button is well designed, easy to press and have good tactile feedback.
Built-in rechargeable battery along with micro USB power input.
Aux and Micro SD input for devices without Bluetooth capability.
Overall, I really liked the build quality and excellent audio experience and I would definitely recommend.
First of all, the looks of the speaker is pretty unique from other speakers I have used over years. Exterior is a metal looking chrome finish and fortunately is not a finger print magnet. All buttons are on the top nicely hidden under a black circle resembling a vinyl record. I think overall design pattern is retro.
All charging and aux ports are on the back. This is a 2.1 speaker and the subwoofer is bottom firing. I charged it for an hour and then started playing my favorite jazz. Wow..the sound is very balanced without any tweaking and it does not sound artificial like a few other speakers in this price range.
I have used this for about 10 plus hours and yet seems to hold a considerable amount of charge. I am not an audiophile and I am very happy with the sound quality and the build. For under fifty bucks, this is a solid speaker for me.
However there were limitations I sought to overcome; portability, volume and other methods of playing music from a bluetooth speaker.
Having had very good experience with Bleudio headphones I decided to give one of their Bluetooth speakers a try.
I chose the Bluedio TS-3 mainly due to its size, advertised battery life, variety of inputs and price.
When I received the TS-3 I was not surprised to find the high quality presentation of the packaging I am used to.
Nor the use of metal in much of it's construction.
I found the overall design a bit unusual at first but the modern aesthetics and balance of chrome and black have gradually won me over.
After unpacking the unit I let it complete a full charge and began to play serval different genre of music in order to get a feel for what the TS-3 was capable of and where it would work best.
I should state at this point I was not looking for a device to use in a large environment such as an assembly hall or even a large outdoor gathering.
So my review may be biased unless taken with those conditions in mind.
The set up was quick and easy with the TS-3 easily pairing with whatever device I wanted.
These include an iPhone, MacBook Pro, Amazon Fire 8 and a generic Windows 10 tablet. All worked on the first try and the controls on the TS-3 were able to control the paired device.
One thing of note is that the relative output level differed between devices connected via Bluetooth.
I found both the iPhone and iPad produced much greater volume at 50% level than either the MacBook Pro or Windows 10 table did.
In fact these other devices required having their volume set almost to the maximum level to match the perceived output from the iPhone and iPad.
However regardless of the device used I can say that the TS-3 gets very, very loud when pushed to its max volume.
It easily filled any room in my home or indeed the more open area of my bottom floor with an unexpected level of sound pressure.
How they get so much volume from a device this size is an exercise in engineering that escapes me to understand.
So I would say that for use in a home, conference room or a basic outdoor bar-b-que you will have no issues with volume from the TS-3.
The sound quality was a bit of a mixed bag for me.
Being someone who prefers classical and jazz music I found the crisp and clear highs very surprising and perfect for those genres.
However the bass is surprisingly absent of a device made by Bluedio. That is not to say there is no bass present, but it is far more subdued than I expected and several times wondering if the subwoofer was working. I was able to confirm that it does function and attribute the lesser bass to the downward firing position of the subwoofer.
A quick check of the specifications also gives an indication of the relative lack of bass with the lowest frequency produced being 50hz.
Another interesting observation was that the effect of the built in EQ is not very subtle until you reach higher volume levels. There is does produce slightly, but noticeable increase in bass response.
So while I find the sound profile crystal clean even at high volumes those expecting a bass heavy experience may be disappointed.
But when I remind myself the purpose this device is designed for; portability, long battery life, clean room filling sound and reasonable price I am lead to realize much of what I have noted as shortcomings are actually realistic engineering compromised to fit that design goal.
Using the different inputs was easy and painless with one exception; the available mobile application that makes using a micro-sd card easier.
While you can control the playback of music from a micro-sd card directly from the unit, the app is supposed to make this easier by providing song and album information and providing more control over what is played in a graphical environment.
However in practice the app unfortunately suffers from no instructions on what the feature are, confusing translation from the original language to English and stability.
While I am sure these can and will be addressed in future updates to the app, at the time of the writing of this review the difficulty using the app almost outweighs the usefulness and I would stick with just using Bluetooth, your preferred music app and skip the micro-sd playback.
Given the issues I have noted in my review I am sure you are asking why I gave it 4 stars.
The answer is that when I write a review I try to judge a device in context of what it was designed to do, the market segment it trys to address and the quality for price.
Where I to try to judge the TS-3 against a $300 multi driver, high wattage/decibel, bass focused bluetooth speaker it would not stack up well at all.
But when I judge it against other $40-$100 bluetooth speakers whose main focus is to produce the loudest volumes possible in a small portable, battery friendly device and do so with any level of clarity, the Bluedio TS-3 is a clear and major winner.
I would not hesitate to purchase the Bluedio TS-3 again and fully expect my freshman college son to "borrow" it any day now.
