A rare authentic snapshot of music and life in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the 1960's. Whereas works of Alan Lomax may be more complete and more professionally edited, "Bluegrass Roots" records a spontaneous and intimate encounter with real people living in the area at the time, shedding light not only on their music but also their life-style.

David Hoffman did a great job here in the video work surrounding Bascom Lamar Lunsford. We should all be thankful for his early work preserving this piece of North Carolina history.

It is what it is, a record (about 50 minutes worth) of a very poor Appalachian world, without a lot of fancy filmwork -- to say the least. It follows Lunsford around (he hardly plays) as a sort of guide to people he knows. The best part of it is the capturing of the square dancing. You can catch most of it on Youtube. I would say it is only for real fans of the original music of the period.

A great documentary on early Bluegrass from the Asheville region of the Smoky Mountains. Nicely done with great music. If you like Bluegrass, buy this today.

If you're from the Carolinas, this will make you homesick. I know it did me.

Enjoyed this immensely! I smiled and toe taped all the way thru. Those folks knew how to have fun! A awesome window into our mountain past! So glad it was preserved and available today!

A well done and enjoyable story of the music of Bascam Lamar Lunsford. Filming was good and showed life in the area where Lunsford lived. Many musicians included. It was fun to watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Alte Stimmungsmomente zu Bluegrass!
