I enjoyed the E Texas characters because they are familiar to me. BLUEHOLE's has a dreaming state of mind cooked-up by the Texas heat, and moonshine.
Shook's lifetime as a director/actor is evident here in BLUEHOlE because it reads fast like a movie, which I would love to see made on it. Steve Buscemi and John Goodman I see as the bad guys.
Paticularly fascinating for me was the action with the K9 characters. Shook's "dog whispering" is riveting and funny, and shows canny insight into a dog's mind (or lack of).
BLUEHOLE is a saticefying romp I gave it 4 stars only because I wanted MORE. I thought it was too short. If it were more expansive (personal preference) I'd give it 5 stars.
The action is certainly balanced out with romantic issues, and a local diva or two. I am an action lover, and the love&sex in BLUEHOLE didn't cloy-up my palette like any kind of chick-flick.
BLUEHOLE is a little testosterone fueled, but that's my favorite kind.
Bravo to Mr. Shook for a fine novel. I encourage everyone to read it.
