Comedy icons John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd star in the outrageously funny musical comedy The Blues Brothers. After the release of Jake Blues (Belushi) from prison, he and brother Elwood (Aykroyd) take their blues band back on the road in an attempt to raise money for the orphanage where they were raised. Havoc ensues as the brothers seek redemption on their “mission from God”. Directed by John Landis (National Lampoon’s Animal House), the soul-stirring comedy classic features musical performances by blues legends Ray Charles, James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Cab Calloway.

Upon watching this for the first time in almost 20 years, it was all coming back to me. The chaotic car chases, destruction of the mall, Nazis jumping off the bridge... who could ask for more? Equally hilarious was how Jake and Elwood remained relatively un-phased by all the destruction and mayhem they were causing, as if it never even happened - PRICELESS! Also not to mention is that the music that went along with all the action fit perfectly and did a superb job of enhancing the experience for the viewer.
Speaking of music, the fact that this movie featured the appearances of legendary musicians such as James Brown, John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, plus many others I may have missed, was definitely a bonus, especially for an avid music lover like myself.
Seriously, this movie is one of the best that has ever been made in the history of filmmaking. Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi (R.I.P.)are true legends, and will always be renowned for everything they've done.
For the viewer born after 1995, it gives a good introduction to many of the famous blues musicians who influenced the music we all hear today (google the names during the end credits).
The Blues Brothers movie may be a bit slow to start, but just like an epic blues song, it picks up the pace until you feel yourself "flying off the cliff."
You can't stop laughing...
These movies are all about the music, saving it, archiving it, enjoying it for those us that grew up with it, or introducing it to those who did not. Additionally, pay close attention and you'll see blues legends like Pinetop Perkins show up in the background of other acts.
The original is simply raucous and a bit raw. They're not trying to make a Hollywood blockbuster, just having fun. The second is sweet - some may say too sweet, but the music carries it through.
Enjoy these for what they are - good fun and great music!
