The living blues drumming legend, Dave Russell, the drummer for decades for such names as Buddy Guy, Son Seals, the author of drumbeats on countless CD-tracks talks from his garage setup. It is not some glorified boisterous video but it is unhurried one. Dave opens his old practicing drum set and teaches that your music is in you. It is in your touch, rhythms, discipline and he demonstrates that even modest kit sounds in the right hands.
Dave's warm, charming personality and his sincere passion for music permeates this course. He cares about the students and shares vision and passion with this generous 4 DVDs course program. Neither he rushes you nor does he want to be rushed as he breaks it into parts and slow it down. There are plenty of opportunities to pay attention to his teaching as much as to his performances. Dave insists you should remember of vocals; keep an eye on lousy bass player and overall musical image. He teaches not only how to do but also of what not to do and it is a mark of real master.
While the focus of this compilation is on blues drumming it definitely will be of use for drummer of any style as it touches things from blues to jazz to rock to country western. Dave never talks down and he communicates like you are an old friend and student as he goes into basics, shows the real juicy bits and explores art of drumming. There is much to share: the years on the stage, the familiarity with industry, the outstanding musicianship. He doesn't try to overwhelm and sincerely cares to teach you whatever he knows. There are many DVDs on drumming out there but it is only one, which takes you into real world of professional musician, shows the goals and caveats. Dave made his blissful musical career from ground up and doesn't tell fairytale promises. In fact he strongly emphasizes the importance of practicing while offers his tricks of doing things. He even refused lavish studio setup and insisted that the sound on the video has to be like something the real beginner musician could achive. There is a taste of this immeasurable fun of being inside the big musicians' world that almost never happens to most of us. One person who once was watching Dave's live performance, and who is drummer of his own rights said that "he does by one hand things I can't do by two". This DVD features multiple camera angles to capture all the nuances of Dave's drumming.
As with Dave's live instructions, this DVD exceeds the scope of mere drums training and goes far deeper by opening to its students the musicianship and art of drumming. Dave Russell teaches in Drums Academy seminars and this DVD course represents compressed version of his four days class on blues drumming and musicianship.

Apart from this I must say that Dave Russell seems like a nice guy and he has things to say that are certainly worth listening to, although mostly interesting for starting drummers. And if you are looking for a 'play along'DVD, this one is not so bad, because he plays complete songs. The man is absolutely not a bad drummer and there may well be enough musicians that want to play with him, or bands that want to have him as their drummer. But he's not of a level to make a drum-DVD and in overal the technical quality of this DVD is bad, no other word for it; far below the other drum-DVD's that one can buy. If you are a starting drummer and can 'score' this one for 5-8 dollars you can do it. But every dollar more is a waste, better spent on other DVD's.
