=== [EDIT: 3 months later] ===
this is STILL my daily driver after 3 months of use, and i've tried a bunch of different other headsets at this point. they're comf as all, serious bass and range for music, audiobooks are clear, battery lasts forever. the only thing is -- these aren't great for upside down or bouncing exercises (e.g. handstands, high knees) because the neckband will either fall off or bounce on your collarbone. so i actually wear a wire-behind-the-neck wireless headphones for running/exercise, but put these back on for all-day normal use.
=======================
first and foremost, if you have never tried this form-factor (neck-band with magnetic bud holders) -- it is simply the best:
- no wires to get tangled in your pocket
- the earbuds are tiny and light, and fit under a hat easily (unlike those that have no neckband, so there's more electronics in the buds themselves)
- they neckband lightweight, you forget about it being there (unlike the bulky over-the ear headsets)
- you never lose your earbuds, and don't have to have a separate carrying case to drag out of your pocket every time you want to start/stop your audiobook or music (unlike airpods)
- battery lasts through like 2 days of heavy use, easy
the one negative about this form factor is that it isn't great for certain exercise types:
- running (they'll bounce on your collar bone)
- anything with rapid jumping (e.g. high knees; they'll bounce on your collar bone); though burpees seemed to be fine w it
- anything upside down (e.g. handstands; they'll fall off you)
LG introduced this form about 3-4 yrs ago (HBS series), but have gone away from magnetic holders in favor of pull-cords for some reason, and now their headsets are way worse because the retractable thin wires dont last long.
so i've had a few headsets in this form factor -- LG HBS 730, 750, 800, and MPOW Jaws -- all really great headsets, your wires never get tangled, each set will last you about a year of heavy use (i'm guessing the same for these, time will tell).
similar to the others, these will vibrate when u get a phone call, you can use Google Assistant (and I'm guessing Siri too) from them.
these are most similar to the lg hbs series, having separate play and phone buttons (not so for mpow jaws, those have a single multi-function button, which is not as great).
[update] one nice feature on these that i haven't had on any other headset is that they buzz really hard on your neck if you forget your phone somewhere. that's VERY handy.
how does the sound on SoundPEATS compare to all other models?
the "noise-reduction" background noise on newer HBS headsets is really annoying, these soundpeats are way better about that, though not quite noiseless like MPOWs.
however, the bass on these is way better than MPOW jaws, so the music sounds really rich (audiobooks sound fine on both sets).
the worst part about the SoundPEATS sound is that they boost the volume too much.
normally you would think that'd be a good thing, but it means that the volume adjustments are jumpy: one notch lower and it's a tad too low, one notch higher and it's a tad too loud.
imean it's fine, i'm still keeping these and will use them as my daily driver, so it's not that much of a problem, though i wish these worked more like LG where the volume on the headset works independently from the volume on the phone -- that way you set the phone to 80% vol and adjust the boosting/lowering of it from the headset.
one hack that you can use to get around this is using your app's equalizer setting to lower the overall volume -- this will reduce the dB jumps for each volume button press.
the mic is really clear, my wife complained about how i sounded with the MPOW jaws, but not with these.
worst part -- the LED status indicator is WAY too bright.
like WAY too bright.
i put a drop of nail polish over the indicator light just so it wouldn't blind me :o
overall -- i've been using these as my daily driver for the last 2mo, and i really love them. i have lots of headphones (wired apple and samsung buds, wired over the ear studio set, wireless mpow jaws in the same form factor, soundpeats in 2 other form factors), over-the-ear wired and wireless, and these are definitely my preferred daily driver (though not what i would wear to run or practice handstands)
UPDATE: March 29, 2018. SoundPEATS vendor reached out to me about my posting. I can commend them for doing that. I expressed to them that I feel very strongly that the charging port issue is something that should be made clear in the product specifications. I want to ensure that in this review that everyone understands that I think the headsets sound great. My only grievance is that the charging port being something other than the common micro-USB port should be either changed to a micro-USB port...or that this is annotated a little more obvious. I still don't see anywhere that this is addressed. I recently bought an Anker mini-core speaker...it has a micro-usb charging port. Pretty much anything I have bought in the last couple of years has had a micro-USB charging port. The resolution was they offered me another pair of the Q900 headset or another one that wasn't a neckband...and didn't know what the charging port is. I opted for another pair and between the two headsets, I should be able to keep the two charged up and to switch out to charge at my one charging station at home.
The first thing anyone should know about these headphones is that the charging cable is NOT the common micro-USB that is used on many different devices. I have an android phone, android tablet various bluetooth speakers...and they all use the Micro-USB plug. I didn't stop to even question if this device uses the micro-USB plug. IT DOES NOT USE THE MICRO-USB plug. I have plenty of micro-usb cables at home, in the car and at work to ensure all my devices are able to charge up. With this device I will have to use the usb cable it came with (not sure if it's proprietary or if it is a mini-usb cable. But I either have to remember to take the cable along or now end up buying more cables. It's a shame too because these are very light and sound pretty good. But it should be advertised with easy to find information prior to purchasing that these take a non micro-usb plug.
