Here are the big ticket observations: For starters excellent Bluetooth range. I can easily attain 50-75ft depending on the surroundings. Sound quality is clean, clear, and loud. There is plenty of volume to get the job done. I agree with other reviewers that the best max volume setting is around the 75-85% range to avoid distortion. The battery life is unbelievable, amazing really. These refurb units come with the 75 hour battery and yes, even at sustained max output this battery can outlast the Energizer bunny. Any negative reviews I found on this unit usually have to do with the battery no longer holding a charge. My thought on this is since I only spent $99 to have this unit dropped on my doorstep, if I have to shell out $20 in the future for a replacement battery then so be it. So far I have had good success buying refurb'ed electronics, maybe I'm just lucky but there was no way to tell the product I received from a new one. In fact, I was so impressed that at my recommendation, our church has also now purchased one of these units.
The last comment is regarding the microphone. Personally, I think it's great that one is even included. Many have stated it's OK, not great. To some extent I agree but I found that the microphone actually works pretty well if you move it close to your mouth. The cord is not very long but a long cord would in essence negate the overall portability of the unit. I have a wireless mic for my unit that is affordable and effective if you don't mind having to replace batteries. The bottom line here is that if the microphone doesn't work for your purposes then you can easily upgrade to something that does. Again though the included microphone is actually pretty darn good if you keep it close to the source and you take the time to balance the microphone volume and master volume properly.
Seriously everyone, this unit is up there with the best $99 I have spent in terms of bang (ahem) I mean boom for the buck ever!
FIRST UPDATE: The second unit I ordered for our church arrived DOA, meaning no AC or DC power or ability to charge, just a dead box. This unit is on it's way back to Amazon as I type. I'm going to give it one more chance as I have already ordered another unit as a replacement. I use the Block Rocker I purchased for myself almost everyday without any issues so I'm hoping this is just an aberration and the next unit be perfect like my first one. I suppose another update will be in order once I receive the next one (fingers crossed).
SECOND UPDATE: Got another unit today and it works perfectly out of the box. I tested all the jacks and controls and all seems to be in order. So far this unit is on par with the first one I bought. Since these units are refurbished there is always the chance you will get one with some small cosmetic imperfections. This unit has a small ding at the very bottom of the speaker grill that has also left a small crack in the plastic trim around the grill. It's not a big deal and without pointing it out would hardly be noticeable. My first unit had a small ding in the speaker grill which I used a really small Allen wrench to pop out. The DOA unit I received did not have a single single blemish on it so c'est la vie, you may get a perfect one or one that shows minor use. All in all I'm really glad I did not give up after receiving a defective unit. I feel that the $60 savings is well worth a small ding in the speaker grill that is bound to happen somewhere along the way anyhow.
Last thought: Of the three units I received the two that worked had date of production stickers dated 06/2013. The defective unit was manufactured during 03/2013. One final comment on the defective unit is that I did notice the quality control was a little lax because it did not sit flush with the ground like the other two. It appeared to me that one of the roller wheels was mounted higher than the other one causing the unit to not sit completely level. If I did not have to return the unit I probably would not have been very happy about that.
-excellent for outdoor activities - picnic, fishing, sports
-long lasting battery. I have not tried full blast and see how long it will last; but at low volume, it will play for days!
-Bluetooth connection works every time
-radio will stay on same station as the last setting
-microphone is not high quality; but I don't need it
-electrical cord does not retract
recommendation: BUY IT !!
The speaker is very portable. It's not too heavy, but heavy enough to feel like a solid product. I think the description lists it at 31 pounds. It has recessed handles on the sides, two back wheels and pullout bar near the top. All of these things feel sturdy and durable.
The sound is good. I used it in my backyard which is about 400 square feet. I'd say that turned all the way up, it could cover twice that and more. It depends on placement of the speaker and other noise, though. The bass is good, but nothing spectacular. Its definitely satisfactory, but not the window rattling kind of bass. The speaker doesn't have an equalizer, but that function can be controlled through one's phone. I did notice some distortion when turning the speaker all the way up, so I wouldn't turn it up past like 95% of the max.
FYI, the speaker has two USB openings for charging, but you can't play your phone through them. I thought this was a stupid idea, but then I realized that you wouldn't be able to charge your phone while someone is playing music because your phone would start playing and ruin the other person's music. It also comes with a microphone and double sided auxiliary cord. It also comes gets radio. I got the refurbished one and it's a great price. $130 for a giant Bluetooth speaker? I'll take it.
