Top Customer Reviews
I hated cords. Despise them actually. Always getting in the way when running or lifting or stretching or anything really. Cords need to go. We have technology that can get rid of cords and so the search began back in January of 2015. I needed wireless earbuds that would sound good (more on that later), stay in my ear at all times (most important), have long battery life, include a microphone just because, look okay and be under $100. Unfortunately for me, I've been fighting a life long battle with earbuds that always fall out. I've tried over the ear, around the ear, clipped to the ear, etc., in the search for the perfect fitting earbud.
I started with some random name wireless earbuds from Groupon and immediately returned them for their ridiculous sound quality (aka no bass at all - not a bit, none, nada). From there, I moved on to the MEElectronics earbuds similar to the JayBirds in their little wing nonsense after reading multiple reviews about how those little wings worked wonders. Fingers crossed. I put them in and they sounded good enough but fell out of my right ear after some jumping around (literally). Back they went. I was close to ordering the JayBirds but with a very similar design (those curved wingtips), I did not see how that would work. Next was a pair of LG Tone Pros. Dont even know why I bothered with these. You have a thing around your neck that moves around. Forget about running or benching or squats. Finally onto the JLab Epics - hoping they would live up to their name. I put them on over my ear, made sure the metallic wraparound cord was snug, used the little clip for the wire to reduce its length and off I went: Central Park, Sunday, 80 degrees. These little guys took the cake. Hands down. No competition for my criteria. I've broken up the review into different sections - hopefully that will help.
Did I mention I've had these earbuds for over a year? No rip, no tear, no nothing. I've thrown them around, I've squished them into my pockets with keys and a cell phone, and they just keep on going. No worries there. Just don't try to pull the cord to see how strong it is or something like that - you're just being stupid at that point. Treat them with some level of care and they will last.
Since these make a good snug fit around your ear canal, you end up hearing more music and less of the outside world (granted they are not completely noise canceling - but this was also not something that was high on my priority list). The earbuds are definitely bass heavy (I like that) and it helps my workouts especially if I need to get pumped up. Mids' are a bit low but not as low as Beats. Trebble comes out clean with no distortion. I find that the sound is more than acceptable and I like that they are bass heavy. These are not for sound connoisseurs - keep that in mind - but they are great for listening to some EDM, Hip Hop, Rap and Pop just fine. Rock also but remember they are a bit bass heavy.
Love the battery life on these guys. I think I've hit 2 weeks of 45 minute workout sessions every other day easily with some battery to spare. They take micro usb and I just plug them in over night or about 20-30 minutes before going to the gym if I know they are low. I also stopped using them for about 3 months and they only lost a tiny bit of charge surprisingly.
Pretty straightforward on the iPhone. When they have paired successfully, you hear "Connected". When unpaired you hear "Disconnected". Similarly, you get a "Power On", "Power Off", "Low Battery" notices as well. Nice touch.
Since distance is rather varied, I'll leave it at this: Bluetooth is not designed to have the range of wifi. Remember that. With that said, I can be within a 30 foot radius of my phone and I am okay. Line of sight matters but that's for things like doors. Random equipment in the way should not really be a problem - besides, don't leave your phone and walk away (What's the matter with you!).
There are 3 buttons, on the earbuds little control remote: Power, Volume Up, Volume Down. A bit hard to press at first but you figure the needed pressure easily enough. Just takes some getting used to.
The JLab Epics' are rated to be water resistant and I took that to mean some light to medium rain (if it's a downpour, stop running in the rain, weirdo) and sweat (lots of sweat). For both of these, I have not had any issues. The only thing that bothered me was that when I do work up a sweat, some of the sweat drops go onto the cord over my ear and I start getting sweat going in my ear. This is not a pleasant feeling but I just take the earbuds out, wipe them on my shirt or towel, and also wipe up any sweat around my ears and keep going (more about this in the Improvements section).
Since the cord is behind your head for these earbuds (it should be behind, not in front of your head weirdo), there is a bit of a distance from your mouth to the microphone. With that said, it does work, just not as well as a microphone that is close to your mouth. I've had people tell me I sound a bit distant but that they can still hear me just fine. I usually take the left earbud off and can get the microphone closer to my mouth. This has the added benefit of making me aware of how loud I am speaking into the mic (don't be a shouter because you have both earbuds in your ear and you think the other person can't hear you but they actually can and you're shouting at them, weirdo).
With that said, I think these are a great set of earbuds that fit my criteria very well. Given that they have lasted for over a year, I don't see how they will not last for some time to come. The last thing I want to mention is some potential improvements that might help make these earbuds even better. 4.5 stars in my book if I could. These earbuds are worth it.
Skip/Next button - Maybe I just have not figured it out but I don't want to take my phone out of my arm sleeve just to skip or go onto the next song. A separate button might be good. Again, maybe its there but I just haven't figured it out. This is minor.
Sweat - I mentioned this earlier but I'm wondering if there is a way to stop sweat from going into my ear. I have had this issue with other wraparound earbuds but Teflon or a water repellent on the cords might help (?). I'll leave that up to R&D at JLab.
P.S. thewirecutter has a review on these earbuds as well.
On the positive, they are very lightweight and comfortable and also sound very good; the bass could be a little better but it was still very good.
On the negative, I found these unusable on a five mile run. The fit didn't work for me; they popped out every quarter mile and one earbud even fell out and off my ear completely, despite the ear hooks (I have a six other pairs of headphones and none of them have ever completely fallen out.) I was looking for something with ear hooks for added stability. These are flexible, but not adjustable and didn't add any extra security for my ears. They are a bit more difficult to reseal on the run than other headphones I have tried. It took some trial and error to figure out how to get a good seal as their seal style is a bit unique. The Bluetooth connectivity was the worst I have ever experienced and absolutely unusable. I had them paired to my phone in a waist strap and the audio would skip incessantly, nearly twice per second for more than half my run. I have a cheap pair of Bluetooth headphones, <$25, and they have never skipped once when used this way.
JLab appears to really stand behind their products and I applaud them for that, but these just won't work for me. Perhaps a future model will wok better.
The earphones also allows for good ambient noise to come through, so you can be more aware of when those large rolling metal machines intent on killing you comes near you and RUN, WHAT ARE YOU DOING THOSE THINGS AREN'T YOUR FRIENDS IF YOU AREN'T IN ONE YOU ARE TO BE RUN OVER NEVER TRUST THAT YOU'LL BE SAFE, ALWAYS BELIEVE THAT CARS ARE INTENT ON KILLING YOU.
I've never ran in the rain so I can't attest to its waterproof capability, but it seems like it's very well designed to prevent water from getting in the electronics.
Once again, invest in a good arm strap for your mobile device. The most irritating thing is the occasional signal cutting out when I move my head the wrong way, and my iPod is less than 2 feet away from it.
This wireless headset is pretty good. JLab is doing some good work here; Sound quality is high for such a compact design, fit is good, battery life is OK (more on that is a second). My concern with this product is it's Bluetooth connectivity. If the battery has been completely charged, everything is fine. However, once the charge has gone below what the gauge reads as around 3/4 the Bluetooth begins to be very hit or miss. It starts with head turns to the right cause short cutouts. Then as the battery goes down even more any head movement causes audio cut out. By the time the battery is at 1/2 it does not matter what you do with your head, the sound just cuts in and out.
If you keep this product charged all the time its great. If you let the battery go down below 3/4 full you will have sound issues.
