Touching; often hilarious; I learned a lot from the adventures and gained an insight and appreciation for life in the villages. Daniel Schwartz, Pattaya Trader Magazine
About the Author
Peter Jaggs is from Essex in England and has spent the best part of the past twenty five years in Thailand since he was in his early twenties and has visited every province in the country.Peter has always believed that real work is a necessary evil and should only be undertaken when funds are required for the extended bouts of bar-hopping, fishing and hanging out on beaches he much prefers. However, he does enjoy writing about his beloved second home and has had articles, stories and poems published in several newspapers and magazines.Although Peter loves women - especially of the Thai variety - he is not married because he feels that a wife would be as much of a hindrance to his freedom and irresponsible lifestyle as a regular job. Besides this, no female on God’s earth could put up with him for any length of time apart from his mother.Peter is currently based between Devon, England and Pattaya City and spends an equal amount of time in each of his two homes with frequent excursions to other favourite venues in Asia.Peter also wrote the first ever book in the English language published on freshwater fishing in Thailand.

Pretty great story how he ended up in Ban Lek vs. running home like most folks would after a catastrophic incident like his in Pattaya. His initial mishap has no doubt happened dozens of times and sent folks packing for good with ruined vacations.
Character development was good and not drawn out or left to guesswork...you got a sense of who all the people were and their different mannerisms/personalities. I finished the book with a good sense of respect for the hardworking people in the village. I'm sure it must've been an almost alien experience living in a world without modern technology, but that makes you respect them all that much more given their simple (but hard) and efficient lifestyle. Helps you understand and makes more sense why the daughters of Issan head to the neon lights of the big city. Think it was said best at some point in the book, something to the effect of...the girls going off to work are more or less Issan's social security system. I can definitely see that.
I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I've always wanted to see where all these absolutely gorgeous stunners in the bars, gogos, etc. come from (Issan)...but was never convinced that I'd bother making a trip from Pattaya to a village for the sake of taking a look. I'm envious the author took on the opportunity to live amongst the people by invitation and really got a sense of community through his experience...awesome!
Having traveled to Thailand for several years/several times a year...after reading this book, I feel like I really don't know anything about Thailand...not the REAL Thailand like the author does.
Their is no shortage of books containing mongering adventures and what not, but this isn't one of them. This is a book about discovery, community, comical antics, the people of Issan and reflection...basically a book with some actual substance. Long story short...this is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it!
*Disclaimer* I do NOT know the author, NOR am I giving a buddy a good review to help book sales. It's simply an enjoyable book!
