A beautiful collection of riddles, puzzles, brain teasers and more! Very useful and helpful.
This is an excellent collection. My students very enjoy learning the English proverbs and quotations of famous people. This book is very helpful for them. It also makes the start of class very good and studious.
Easy activities to access and complement lesson plans! I plan on using them with lessons, as well as with my conversation groups. I also like how I can use many of the activities with mixed level classes.

One noteworthy aspect of “On the Board” that must be mentioned is that the quotations on pages 39-47 are reflective of diversity of thought spanning various countries, cultures, eras, and ideologies. The first quote on page 39 is by American evangelical preacher Charles R. Swindoll while different quotes from the Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Mark Twain, Salman Rushdie, Shakespeare, and Rumi appear at least twice. Not only are important British and American figures such as Edmund Burke and Theodore Roosevelt quoted, ancients like Thucydides and notable Europeans such as Sven Goran Eriksson are cited. Men representing different eras, religions, political views (Karl Marx is even quoted!), countries, and continents are cited, giving English teachers quotes they may use to broaden their students’ awareness of individuals who come from various cultures and countries. It must be stressed that Burns’ section on meaningful quotations was not written to promote diversity but to expand students’ knowledge and appreciation of other people’s thoughts through the medium of English. However, only four women in total are quoted. Perhaps a later, expanded edition of “On the Board” will include more quotes from profound women to compliment the statements of the equally insightful men Burns already cites.
If you are an ESL teacher in need of thoughtful, humorous warm-ups and activities to introduce new material or review old material, “On the Board” by Walton Burns is a book you ought to include in your library of resources.
