Ostensibly the book does more or less what it says on the cover - each song is listed and commented on and several anecdotes are aired about various well-known classics. It should be made clear that the period covered from Dylan's huge output extends only as far as the release of "Nashville Skyline", thus not touching some of his really great later works. What soon becomes wearisome is the dogged rigidity of the format. Each album is discussed in general terms and then each track is listed with a few lines of what are considered, I suppose, "stories behind the songs". By about "Highway 61 Revisited" I was getting really bored with the heavy-handed construction and was sorely missing some mercurial insights which could surprise and reveal something I might not already know. The book ends abruptly on the last track of "Nashville Skyline" with no afterword or conclusions drawn, as though the author had simply run out of steam, perhaps arriving at the same sense of overwhelming déja-vu as the reader.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Even though the actual meaning behind most of Dylan's songs are subject to conjecture, and the man himself does his best to shroud the origins in secrecy, Andy Gill gives an interesting perspective of what might possibly have been going on in Dylan's mind while writing them. And that is good enough for me.
