Update: it works
The most informative review of this product came from an online article summarizing a Connecticut study of deer repellants http://www.motherearthnews.com/organic-gardening/deer-repellent-zb0z1208zmat.aspx#axzz3Gz7iy6hh The results showed Bobbex had the highest effectiveness rate at 93% -- pretty good in my book. The biologic ingredients are disgusting and are apparently repulsive to the deer. Naturally, the smell is terrible, so do not spill it or get it on your clothing. But, once the spray is applied and dries, the stench disappears (to our noses), but remains effective as a deer repellent.
We found the Bobbex Deer Repellent to be effective, safe, affordable and easily applied from the handy spray bottle of premix. One 32 oz. bottle was enough for an entire year for our front yard plantings. We couldn't be more pleased with the results and have recommended this product to our neighbors as well.
It's only moderately smelly as you apply it, but avoid getting too much on you and do not get your nose close to the plant for a day or so afterwards as it really gives it a rotten egg scent. You'll also be washing your hands particularly hard after use. ha. May want to use gloves.
I was gone an hour around dusk and returned to see the entire top portion of a major tomato branch eaten off after it had been on the plant 3 days. I later found a hornworm on this section of the plant, and that may have been the culprit, but I still believe it was a deer for two reasons. One, it was quite high on the plant, nearly 5 ft off the ground, and secondly, because so much had been eaten. I don't think a single hornworm could eat the growing end of a branch in only an hour. It was a lot of leaves and stems and blossoms.
So it might not keep deer away completely. And it recommends only applying every week or two.
This stuff has a very unpleasant odor. It eliminates that tomato plant smell and replaces it with a nasty sulfur/rotten egg scent which you'll smell if you get near the plant to inspect for insects, suckers, hornworms, etc. I'm not positive if it repels deer, but it sure repels me.
Since the alternative is either hard to manage netting or an 8ft tall fence, it's this stuff or nothing. I think it's definitely better than nothing.
