About the Author
Carolyn's stories have appeared in God Allows U-turns Series, Cup of Comfort Series, MomSense magazine, Guideposts magazine, and other publications. Her mission; however, is protecting children from childhood sexual abuse. When she was four, a hired field-hand attempted to molest her. Miraculously, she got away and told her father. Everything. She has spent the past twelve years championing this issue and has received training certificates from some of the leading organizations dedicated to protecting children. Bobby Gilliam, Brave and Strong is her second sexual abuse prevention book. A national MOPS speaker, mother, and former teacher, her life has been enriched through child advocacy, adoption, and foster care. She and her husband, Ken, call Pennsylvania home.

Like Ana’s Song, this equally marvelous second installment in the Rise and Shine Movement series follows the format of the protagonist—in this case, young Bobby Gilliam—waking up feeling unsettled by a nightmare. His dad uses this as an opportunity to teach him about the real-life danger of pedophiles. Explained through dialogue, the information provided is concise and easy for children to comprehend.
Shortly after this conversation takes place, Bobby is confronted by a situation in which a trusted adult exposes him to a pornographic video. Thanks to his father’s instructions, Bobby is equipped with a plan of action: yell, run, and tell.
Renowned public speaker and abuse prevention activist, Carolyn Byers Ruch does a phenomenal job of balancing this remarkable piece of literature on the fine and sometimes blurry line of safeguarding children without instilling unnecessary fear. This book perfectly accomplishes its goal of preparing young boys for the issues against which they may need to defend themselves, yet at the same time, it does not make them feel as though the world is too scary a place in which to live. A must-have for anyone who wants to protect the children in their care.
If you are the leader of a church, or a principal, I recommend you hire Carolyn to give a presentation at your establishment. As someone who knows her on a personal basis, I can confidently say that not only is Carolyn deeply passionate about her cause, but she is always personable, informative, and possesses the straightforwardness and honesty that is so hard to come by in most people these days.
