Trustworthy and Dependable Flour

This is our favorite brown rice flour on the market. We have had to eat gluten free for about fifteen years and this has been a staple in our home. We use it as a base to make our own gluten free mixes. It is okay on its own for baking but needs some guar gum or xanthum gum to hold the baked goods together. If you are just using this for a breading or thickener it works great on its own. In our opinion it has a better flavor than white rice for most things.
The flour is not gritty and is made from the whole grain, so it is much higher in nutritional value. It is high in protein, iron, fiber and vitamin B. Brown rice flour is also a great source of manganese, which is important for bones and cartilage and also helps with the absorption of calcium in our bodies. We would highly recommend this brand of rice flour!
Favorite baking mix recipe for gluten free baking:
2 cups brown rice flour.
1/2 cup potato starch.
1/2 cup arrowroot flour
1/4 cup tapioca flour.
1 tsp xanthum or guar gum
Mix together and store in airtight container and use as you normally would regular flour.

Since going gluten-free several years ago, we began using this flour and we love it. We do worry a bit sometimes about the possible arsenic in it, but after contacting the company we feel much better. They said they did test it once, and it was under accepted limits. Also, all of their rice comes from California, and from my research, that is the safest place for the lowest arsenic levels.

I use this a lot in baking, and sure, sometimes the consistency isn't quite the same, but it is still darned good. I never mind a little bit of crumbling in my treats. I love to mix this with polenta and cornmeal, and make a gluten-free, sugar-free cornbread. It's so mouth-watering baked in my pre-heated iron frying pan. I use maple syrup and palm sugar as the sweetener. Delicious.

My husband raves about it's sweetness for rolling and pan frying anything. It really is great for that.

Our only complaint is the stores usually only carry the 24 ounce packages. We are happy Amazon carries the larger 48 oz. packages. Why can't they package this in a five pound sack like normal flour? How hard is that?

It is far cheaper to purchase Bob's on Amazon if you are a Prime member. Shipping on the Bob's Mill website is really spendy.

I used to get brown rice flour at local store, but one time the brown rice flour at the store were expired so I don't want to wait for them to restock. I happened to find these at Amazon and the price is pretty much the same so I tried this brand. It bake great gluten free bread and cookies. The flour is very fine and I do not notice any different with the Arrowhead Mill brand that I have been using. I tried making my own white rice flour with Vitamix and this brown rice flour is more fine than the flour I made at home. The expiration date was more than 6 month from the day I got it, so getting 4 bags is not a problem. Each time I bake bread I use 2 cups. There are 4 bags inside a cardboard box, and there is another shipping box so it was well protected during shipping.

the answer to being allergic to wheat

I don't know what they did to wheat. I have been eating bread for over 60 years and love it. All of a sudden I started having trouble breathing and spent nearly $5000 on doctors and drugs. Diagnosis was Asthma, though none of the $300 per month drugs worked. Then I heard a segment on NPR about a guy with similar problems and his solution was to stop eating wheat product which was hard for him as he came from a family of bakers. Within less than a week he felt better, much better. I tried the same thing and within three days two years of misery were over. Now I stay away from breads, but if I don't, it only takes about an hour and my lungs hurt again.
Is this some more genetically modified grain of which the public remains uninformed? Also, so much for doctors and their diagnostic abilities.
This rice flower is a great substitute for wheat and if you look, there are some excellent recipes.

This is priced a few dollars less than at store, and the 24-oz packaging makes it easy to keep your flour from going stale too quickly. The automatic reordering option is great, too, so you can get an additional discount and plan on your next shipment. If you are making recipes using Annalize Roberts', "Gluten Free Baking," she mentions this brand is too coarse for most of the cake recipes (but OK for pizza dough.) I bought some white rice flour from the Asian store and you can definitely feel the difference. The finer ground flour felt like regular flour, and Bob's Red Mill had a slight grittiness to it. But I just ran it through my VitaMix flour attachment and it is perfect!!!

The amazon price for Bob's Red Mill Organic Brown Rice Flour is outstandingly better than at the local supermarkets. We use this flour for virtually everything: cookies, brownies, gravy---about the only thing we don't make with it is bread. Unfortunately, as far as bread goes, brown rice flour needs a lot of extra ingredients to give that texture that matches wheat, and at least for us, isn't worth the trouble.

We've been eating this flour for over a year now, and it hasn't let us down yet. In spite of what people say, most baked goods do not require even half the extra things that are often called for, including recipes that call for "all purpose flour." We use this in place of most wheat flour recipes and haven't really run into any problems. You don't even have to actually look up "gluten free" recipes: just substitute this rice flour and you're good.

Great flour, works well in my mix--included--but I 'm posting because I'm glad Amazon started carrying the bargain boxes of Bob's flours--I can finally get the flours I need for a reasonable price.
Being wheat free--I have to mix my own gluten free blend: 2 cups tapioca, 1.25 cups brown rice, 1.25 white rice and 2 scant tablespoons of xanthum gum--That's a great mix for baking---I go through a lot of flour compared to the old gluten type--smaller bags ---so usually expensive at the grocery store--but buying in the box with multiple bags is much cheaper. Also Bob's products are uniformly excellent.
