"Groat" is an old Scottish word from hundreds of years ago that refers to cereal made from whole hull-less oats. They take a bit longer to prepare than cut or rolled oats, but the exceptionally hearty flavor and chewy subtlety of this wholesome porridge make it well worth the wait. Oats are a very good source of soluble fiber, which prevents cholesterol from entering the bloodstream, so start your day the heart-healthy way with a rich bowl of Bob's Red Mill Whole Grain Oat Groats. They also make a great side dish for dinner.

Groats are unprocessed oat grains-- they look like brown rice. Takes about an hour to cook, then has a slightly nutty taste and slightly chewy texture. I used to eat oatmeal groats as a kid, rather than steel-cut (or, yuck!, instant), and these are like I remember. But I have a complaint about the packaging: both (BOTH!) packages had similar 1" tears/cuts in at the same place in each bag. Both bags were shipped together in a zip-loc bag, and some groats had spilled into the zip-loc bag. I took the first torn bag out and was careful not to spill any more. But I never thought the other bag would also be torn, and when I removed it from the zip-loc bag the tear was downward and I spilled about 20% of the groats onto the floor. So, buy the groats because they taste good, but be careful of the packaging.
This stuff is like big chewy oatmeal on steroids. I found a recipe on their site. Get a small crock pot. Put in a cup of groats. Put in three cups of water. Add some salt if you want. Cook overnight. Next morning you have about three days' worth of oatmeal. Keep it in the fridge. Scoop out what you want. Microwave on high for a minute and a half. Stir, then repeat. Bango! Oatmeal. And not like a bowl of quick oats. Great stuff.
I prefer the texture and taste of the whole oats to the cut oats, and Bob's is one of the few vendors to sell groats. Some people are discouraged by the long cook time, but use your crockpot--put 1 cup groats and 3 cups of water with a bit of salt in a heat resistant bowl and place in a crockpot partially filled with water on low before you go to bed and you will have delicious steamed (and non-crusty) oatmeal when you wake up.
i don't know if it's living up to the "premium quality" because i'd say at least 1/4 of the grains are not whole and I've found some that have turned dark or black...no complaints otherwise.
This is the best form of oat meal. It takes longer to cook but the taste is far better than any of the easier-to-prepare versions. Whole Grain Oat Groats are almost impossible to find in stores; being able to get them online is a blessing. And Bob's Red Mill is a company that I trust.
I love to make these for breakfast. I usually make enough for a couple of days and store the cooked groats in the fridge. Using my pressure cooker on high, it only takes 15 minutes to cook them. (It's much faster than cooking them on the stove.) I mix the groats with fruit and pumpkin seeds, and it is delicious!
