Product Description

Product Description

Bob's Red Mill Raw Shelled Sunflower Seeds are a delicious addition to baked goods, granolas, and trail mixes. They are a good source of dietary fiber and iron, while offering 6g of protein per serving. Try seasoning and toasting the kernels for an irresistible snack (toasting instructions are on the back of the bag). Add raw sunflower seeds to almost anything to boost nutrition - besides snacking, they're also great in energy bars, vegan burgers, breads, and muffins. Sunflower Seeds can be ground into a homemade "sun butter," an allergy-friendly alternative to peanut butter.

About the Brand

Bob Moore's secret to life may just be "work hard and keep it simple." Living this philosophy, Bob literally puts his nose to the grindstone every day. Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods is an Oregon-based company that utilizes simple, old-world technology to mill hundreds of all-natural whole grain products.

Bob's Red Mill is dedicated to the manufacturing of natural foods in the natural way. In their own words: "With all the sophisticated knowledge of recent times, no machinery has yet been developed that grinds grains into flour quite as well as our flint-hard quartz millstones quarried in France and used by discriminating millers since early Roman times."

"Our well-dressed (sharpened) sets of millstones turn the highest quality wheat into a finer, better baking bread flour than all the hammer mills, steel roller mills, steel buhr mills, or pulverizers ever built! These slow turning millstones grind the bran, endosperm, and germ (containing its nutritious wheat germ oil) into flour in a cool natural way, creating a more assimilable food."

Bob's Red Mill stone grinds all common and most uncommon grains into flours and meals on its over 100-year-old mills. They mix them into an astounding array of unique cereals, pancake and waffle mixes, machine and hand-made bread mixes, quick bread mixes, gluten-free mixes, and specialty grain products.

I agree with a reviewer - these sunflower seeds are mixed with very hard bits that could break teeth, and these bits are visually hard to tell from the seeds, but your teeth will for sure tell you when they've got one. It's outright dangerous for people of any age, even if there are "just" a few in each bag. The seeds themselves are fresh and tasty, but not worth taking the risk. These packages should not be allowed to put on the shelf until this problem is resolved.

The sunflower seeds themselves are very fresh, and I further ensure this remains the case the same way I keep all of my nuts & seeds fresh - by keeping most of them frozen in a vacuum-sealed bag, and then for day-to-day consumption, I keep a relatively small quantity in a snap-lock type of container in my fridge.

So why the 1-star review? The problem with these sunflower seeds is that interspersed with them are the occasional very tiny (essentially invisible as I have yet to actually see one despite looking very carefully) fleck of plastic. I don't particularly enjoy eating plastic in any form as I doubt it's ever good for you, but it's made even worse when you consider that I like to fresh-roast my nuts and seeds immediately before using them, and melting / melted plastic smells and tastes absolutely awful, not to mention that the fumes and heated plastic are probably significantly worse for you yet. I'm debating what to do with the rest of the seeds, since I consider them essentially unusable as-is and I haven't yet figured out a possible way of filtering them that works reliably...

Bob's Red Mill Natural Raw Sunflower seeds are less expensive than Sunridge Farms Organic Sunflower Seeds -- the brand I previously bought -- but I judge the freshness, wholeness, and tastiness of the seeds to be less than Sunridge. If you're cooking with the seeds or grinding them, Bob's product is fine. If you're eating the seeds out of the bag, I'd spend the extra bucks and go with Sunridge. Amazon delivered the goods on time and in good condition.

You can trust Bob's Red Mill products, and these raw, natural, sunflower seeds are a good example! We keep them frozen and use them all year, taking out what we need. At the end of a year or two, they are still as fresh and tasty as the day we got them. Highly recommended!

Initialy I rated this product five stars (but read the rest of the review). (Moreover, I then gave it three stars, but, regrettably, even that was too much, as I eventually discovered.)

I just got the second shipment of this stuff -- it seems great (so far: and I'll update this review if I have anything new to say, good OR bad). Both times it came very fast, packaged well (in a cardboard box holding four plastic bags, each holding over half a kilo of these seeds). The quality seems very good, good taste.

I add these seeds to oatmeal, and actually, just eat them straight quite a bit: I just walk around with a bag in one hand and a spoon in the other :-) . Unlike flax seeds (which are nothing special), sunflower seeds are really tasty, so I have to stop myself from finishing off a whole bag in one sitting.

I used to buy them in our store here, but those are salted and fried, so I figured one day, I get a ton of salt every time I gorge on those seeds, so I googled for unprocessed seeds, and lo and behold, Amazon has them (at a better price too). I've never bought food here, but this turned out to be a very easy option, no-hassle quick delivery: one day you simply find your order on your porch... the stuff isn't easily perishable, so that works fine. I gotta say, as much as I detest Amazon's obvious love of fake five-star reviews from publishers' shills, when it comes to variety and order fulfillment, they're very good, addictive really.

I see some reviewers mention another supplier of these seends -- thanks for that; this is something to try in the future. For now all I can say, Red Bob's sunflower seeds seem (taste) pretty good to me. Supposedly they're very healthful, but even if it's all hype, they taste good enough to eat them just for that.

The 4-20oz shipment I got has been top quality. I look at every handful, and I've never taken a single seed out for being questionable in any way. The final proof to me is that I've never picked up a hint of off-taste or oxidation. Bob's must start with very good seed stock and have an excellent process for *selection* of what they package. I'm very pleased with the results. Kudos...I've purchased a gazillion things from Amazon and this is the first one I've been moved to write a review on. That said, I would be willing to pay a premium for similar quality sunnies that were certified Organically Grown!

I've liked most all the Bob's Red Mill products I've bought and I was loving these sunflower seeds until about 6 months ago when more and more burnt seeds showed up in the bags. Who wants pre-burned sunflowers in their Sunbutter?

Since I do not sprout my sunflower seeds, I can't dispute whether they are really raw or not, but I got to thinking, if the process is so hot that it's burning some of the seeds, what about the ones that aren't burned? Anyway, just a hmmmmmm thought for me. I've moved on to get my sunflower seeds at my local whole foods store. I still buy a lot of other Bob's Red Mill products though and have no complaints.
