Top Customer Reviews
I initially bought a larger kettle from another manufacturer, but returned it due to the poor quality (lid seemed to melt after going through the pre-use cleaning process) and the fact that 1.7L was just too large for me. Neither my roommate or girlfriend are tea drinkers, so I am usually making tea for one (or sometimes two). Accordingly the old kettle, which had a minimum fill equal to the full fill on this kettle, was wasteful to use.
After searching high and low, this seemed to be the only quality kettle I could find that was well suited for a solo drinker. It is priced higher than I would have liked (pricier than the larger one, actually). However, I have been very happy with the kettle. Filling it about halfway is perfect for a larger cup of tea for one, and filling to the max works out well for two. The unit is quiet, and the plastic gets warm but not unbearably hot like the stainless steel ones.
Boiled down (no pun intended), here are the pros and cons:
-Small, perfect for tea for 1 or 2
-Compact on the countertop
-Seems well built
-Plastic almost all the way around, except for the heating unit at the bottom
-Black looks good, but might have purchased the red one in retrospect
-Lid opens a bit awkwardly - it spins in place and is suspended above the reservoir, which makes for an awkward fill at times
+ plug is attached to the bottom element, which is detachable from the teapot itself, so I don't have to plug/unplug every time I need to heat water. My last water heater was very tedious to use as a result.
- plastic taste that hasn't gone away even after a week of use.
- lid doesn't detach or open all the way. It swings and remains attached to the kettle, but you can't remove it if you want to clean the insides because the opening on either side isn't big enough for my hand to fit in.
- white things floating in the water after a week of use. I don't know what they are, plastic maybe? All the other cons and I would've given it a higher rating, even 5 stars, but the fact that it adds floaty white things in my water where my 2 other electric water heaters don't is the deal breaker.
This kettle basically holds about 2 mugs of coffee. It says 4 cups on the water level, but that is the euro-size 4 oz servings. Filled, it boiled for me in about 3.5 minutes. The lid doesn't remove, it pops open on a hinge, I actually like this feature. It doesn't say bpa-free on the box, but it's advertised as such so I'm taking their word for it. It takes a few minutes before you can use it again; never a problem with me. Finally, it is a cute product and the only reason it won't get 5 stars is that for a plastic kettle, it's too expensive - but it seems to have no competition in the market and it IS perfect for me as a single in a small apartment.
^^^ Yeah, that's how I felt 9 months ago when it arrived. Today, it almost set my house on fire. Last week, it didn't heat all the way, so I cleaned it with vinegar and it seemed to be fine. Yesterday, I smelled this burnt smell but I thought it was the new coffee beans I'd just opened. Today, it started SMOKING and smells like scorched, melted plastic. I usually run out for the mail or check the birdfeeder while my water boils, thank all that is holy that today I was close by when this started.
It hasn't even been used much. I will replace my electric kettle. But not with this model again. eek!
Bodum has great products. Have their mugs or glasses plus bought a Bodum toaster recently when needed. I could not be happier! Their products come in bright cheerful colors, too!
