First of all, knives are one of the most important tools in a kitchen. For some people they even become an obsession. Understandably so, because after having worked with a state-of-the-art knife there is no going back. Secondly, knives need to be handy - right there on the kitchen counter for easy access and yet safely stored at the same time. The Bistro knife keeps your everyday paring, utility, chef's and bread knives handy and safe. The inside of the knife block is made of a myriad of very fine plastic sticks allowing any knife to sit anywhere in the block - tight and secure. The block's casing is made of plastic and its silicon feet anchor it firmly. It comes in black, red, green, orange, white and purple making it easier than ever to match any kitchen's color scheme.

I've had those wooden knife blocks-- couldnt get all my chef's /santoku knives in.

And then I upgraded to one of those wooden blocks with the black rod inserts-- I could put more variety of knives in, but still couldn't put that many, and the rods would break within the block and slowly you couldn't fit even the knives you had in there before back in. They just kept sticking out higher and higher even though it was quite deep. Eventually the side split open.

And now, this Bodum knife block. At last! So like the one I mention above (I think I had gotten mine at superstore), I could put a great variety in this one. AND, since the outside isn't wooden and rigid, when you stick a knife in, the slide poofs out a very little bit. You can't really see it, but that flexibility lets you put knives in and not run into limitations on how many you can put into the block due to space left between the rods! You are limited by space of all your handles and being able to grasp the right knife, but that's it!

We've purchased 2 of these knife blocks into which we've put 4 chefs/santoku knives, 2 bread knives, a cleaver (which I never managed to put in a knife block before), a tomato knife, 3 paring knives and a small santoku! I also a pair of kitchen shears and I have a rod knife sharpener in there. The latter sticks up (too long) but everything else fits right in.

I've only had these a couple weeks but I love them already. I read on some other reviews that the plastic rods come out and can be washed in the dishwasher. I didn't try that yet, but BONUS!

Oh! and the red color is quite nice. I would have prefered something more subtle but so far they only come in electric colors and black.

I bought this specifically to fit a Kramer 8 inch chef's knife. I could have bought a Kramer block or as my husband was suggesting just buy the knife block set for $800. Instead I bought this and got the only knife I wanted saving me $600. This thing is slim, taking up my less counter space than my wustof wood block, which is now being retired to the goodwill. I have inside of it a Kramer chef, wustof santoku, a bread knife, scissors, honing steel, 3 paring knives and a cheese knife.

This is a fantastic item. Love the colour, design is great, takes up less counter space and can fit at least 10 knives, more if they are small. No slots, just a material that allows the knife to slip into place which makes it so much more versatile. Much better than those wooden blocks.

Color: Red Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
On the plus side, it is red (or in a variety of other colors) and the concept of the plastic rods works well to hold short knives (longer knives stick out due to the length of this product). It is truly easy to slide them right in and out rather than dealing with a conventional knife block where you are guessing which hole to put the correct knife in. However, another company had this exact same concept, the same price point, but executed it better (minus the fun colors). I owned the Kapoosh knife block (same plastic rod design) before I owned the Bodum and I must say that knife blocks are meant to be angled. The Kapoosh model I own has two different sections which holds more knives than the Bodum as well. The benefits of an angled knife block is not only to see them easier, to pull them out and put them in easier but also to make sure that longer knives aren't sticking straight up hitting the cabinet above (I know a lot of houses have cabinets above their knife blocks, but not everyone, so this is only a problem for some of us). Until Bodum comes out with an angled version, I am sticking with the Kapoosh in its boring black.

Color: Red Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
As others have mentioned, this is not something that you will be using to replace your good old wooden knife block, but it's a great addition to any kitchen. It's not the right size for my large chef's knife, but for my smaller serrated knife, steak knives, paring knife, etc., it's really handy. Each knife slides in and out smoothly, but I still prefer my angled wooden knife block. The price is a little much for what this is as well; if it was at least $10 cheaper, it would be a much better deal.

Bought this in the cream color. It fits all six of my Pure Komachi knives, to include the longer bread knife, albeit at an angle, with plenty of room to spare. You'll run out of space due to the knife handles before there's too little space for the blades. The plastic pieces hold the blades securely - there's no shifting around. It takes up very little space on my kitchen counter and looks artsy fartsy, especially when compared to many of the traditional wooden blocks I've had in the past. Very pleased with this purchase.

Item arrived with the bottom broken. I could have superglued it back together but shouldn't have to for that much money so back it goes. Reordered another which will hopefully be okay as I love the look.

These are actually three piece knife blocks: the bottom, the top and the inner knife area. These are a great idea and a great shape and I was excited to get my knives out of my overcrowded utensil drawer. However, the top portion of this knife-block only sets on the bottom and the bottom is not attached in any way. The whole assembly (with sharpened knives) falls apart when it is moved. I was lucky that the knives did not actually fall out when I moved it to clean the counter.
